The really amazing part was that they are all hand sewn! Holy scrap. I'm blown away and sort of saddened that someone didn't get to see their project(s) completed. The stacks in the photos are the orphans. Everything else in the pics is what was in the rest of the bags.

Wowwwwwwwwwwie! that is a great score!

I think it is wonderful that someone who can do something with another quilters UFO's got this stash. I have more things started than I can finish in a lifetime. Plus I have scraps and UFO's from my X's mother and grandmother, and my mother. I sure hope a quilter gets my UFO's and stash. I enjoy the process of piecing and designing as much as the finished product.

Wow what a find!!!Looks like a lot of fun to me!!!

Aussie Quilter 01-28-2011 06:10 PM

Lucky you, that sort of thing never gets past the back room of our thrift stores, let alone to the front of them for anyone else but staff to take.

Lockeb 01-28-2011 06:19 PM

Ileen 01-28-2011 06:29 PM

WOW!! Happy for you!!!

BizzieLizzie 01-28-2011 06:40 PM

WOW! Do you think you will finish them off or are you thinking of undoing them and making them up again in a different way?

lisalisa 01-28-2011 06:58 PM

I boxed some up and sent them off to one of the charity quilters here on the board. Two pound of blocks and it didn't even dent the stack. What's in the pics is a little mis-leading cause they are so densely packed together.

I'm a little afraid to wash them. They are quite clearly old, have been stored for a while and the nature of the hand stitching makes them very delicate. I might have to re-enforce them.

I really don't know what to do except stare and marvel.

kajaza 01-28-2011 07:15 PM

Great find!

sew wishful 01-28-2011 07:31 PM

WOW!! What kind of thrift store do you have? wish we had one that took material and put it in bags. Wish we had a good thrift store...we have Goodwill and a couple consignment stores, but would love a SA!!!
Great find!!

Aussie Quilter 01-28-2011 07:36 PM

At our local Lifeline store, anything half decent is skimmed off out in the back roomand doesn't even make the front of the store. What's left is crap.

IDquilter 01-28-2011 08:44 PM

Such a deal, a great find!

Becca Bear 01-28-2011 08:46 PM

thebossbab 01-28-2011 08:55 PM

What a great find for you...enjoy!

Gerbie 01-28-2011 09:40 PM

I think it would be so neat to put all of the orphan blocks together in one quilt or maybe two. Do you hand quilt? That would be a real treasure in itself. just my opinion

Ha, no. I'm not that patient. I'm afraid they are going to fall apart to be honest.
Anyone have any suggestions for washing them?

lisalisa 01-28-2011 10:04 PM

Btw I weighed the bag they're in. 10 pounds. That's after I shipped 2 lbs off. They're all 6 1/2 blocks. There are probably enough for several quilts. Might be fun to do one of those double sided things.

Gerbie 01-28-2011 10:06 PM

The reversible or (double sided) quilts are really easy to make. p.m. me if you need more info on it. I can't remember the name of my book at the moment, but will find it and give you the name. I think the author is Sharon Pederson, not sure at the moment, but that name comes to mind.

jackied 01-28-2011 10:12 PM

It is sad that they were just given away but lucky you for getting them.

tutty 01-28-2011 10:26 PM

Are you kidding me ! Wow ! Enjoy

Dotsie 01-28-2011 11:07 PM

A genuine lucky packet, good luck to you.

cheryl rearick 01-29-2011 12:19 AM

I bet some granny made those.. very nice find :)

Ann L 01-29-2011 04:11 AM

Nice find. Nothing around here like that.

johnniek 01-29-2011 05:24 AM

You were so lucky. Great buy I would say..

lisalisa 01-29-2011 06:54 AM

I take that back. There are 400 plus blocks. I counted them. I presume it would have been 500 if you count what I sent off already. Sad thing is I didn't even buy them all. The people who run the place separated them into different bags. I didn't want to look like (more of) a freak hauling them out, but if I go back today and they are still there I'm going to snatch them all up. They seem to be all done with vintage fabrics. A few are current-ish. Some are made with poly and flannel. It's been a trip going through them all.

sewwhat85 01-29-2011 07:39 AM

great find

Eddie 01-29-2011 07:41 AM

Holy cow, that's a lot of vintage blocks! I hope you sew them all up into something beautiful! Great find!
