my local thrift store sells bundles of fabric for a dollar a bag. You never know what you're gonna get. A little of this and a little of that. They're great stash builders. Well today, for some reason, they dropped the price to 50 cents a bag so I loaded up. When I got them home I found what must be 2 or 300 orphan 9 patches. Mostly done with different fabrics. The really amazing part was that they are all hand sewn! Holy scrap. I'm blown away and sort of saddened that someone didn't get to see their project(s) completed. The stacks in the photos are the orphans. Everything else in the pics is what was in the rest of the bags.

What a great find! I never think to check for fabric at the thrift store. I think I'll start though.

quilting cat 01-27-2011 12:23 PM

Yeaaah! Where is that thrift store???
If the thrift store benefits a charity that could use a fundraiser quilt, that would be my use of some of the orphan nine-patch blocks!

Might be worth a shot to call your local hospital and ask if they have an auxiliary. They're usually low key but run by very devoted little ladies who do a lot of lip service to round up donations. Up until fairly recently ours was a little hole in the wall that hardly anyone knew about. Of course they've since moved to main street and everyone knows now but even still, I score every time I go. They have the fun bags and yards rolled up. One of these days I'll post a pic of my stash to illustrate how one can build a stash without ever setting foot into a fabric store.

Still a little unsure what to do with these blocks. They seem rather old and fragile since they were all hand pieced. My DN wants to have a go at them so I'll probably let her do that so she can sharpen her skills.

Wow. Yeah, it is kind of sad to think someone never got to finish all their projects but maybe she was like a lot of us, had big ambitions and then once she got started she just wasn't interested enough to finish them. Someday somebody is going to get a lot of ufos from my sewing room and probably wonder what in the world I was going to do with them - some of them i don't even know what I was trying to make anymore!

oma66 01-27-2011 01:22 PM

wow...what a haul. Let us see what you are going to create. Bet it will be colorful and wonderful.

Japonica 01-27-2011 03:07 PM

Wow! Good for you!

sueisallaboutquilts 01-27-2011 03:26 PM

Wow! I know what you mean though about thinking why someone didn't finish them. I've bought blocks before and thought the same thing.
Then again maybe someday someone will wonder about me when they uncover all my ufo's hahaha

wolph33 01-27-2011 03:28 PM
