Just HAD to show you guys this. I found this pattern last night about 10:00 -- stayed up till midnight trying it out!!!! Hint: the picture of her pattern shows squares in the wrong place...I had to go to the written word and follow that. That's hard to do when you're a "visual" type of person!!! Anyway, this is out of scraps...now I'll probably not find something I like to make it with!!! Oh - the pic makes my carpet look mauve....it's not!!! It's beige! Here's the website where I found it: http://www.freequilt.com/amishquilts.html It's called "Amish boxes"

Very pretty!

Gramakitten 05-17-2010 07:35 AM

Love that block.

Yvonne 05-17-2010 07:38 AM

That block looks like a lot of fun to make. Thanks for sharing. Have fun finding the perfect fabric. Always the challenge but we're up to it!

amandasgramma 05-17-2010 07:40 AM

Here's a hint....looks like 1 block of 4 in the center...but there's actually 2 4-blocks. The picture makes it look like 1 4 block with longer pieces on the side....but you actually put the longer pieces on the top and bottom of the 4-block........GEEZE, that THAT make sense?????? and yes, it WAS fun!!! Otherwise, I wouldn't have been up till midnight!!!! LOL

raptureready 05-17-2010 07:41 AM

I looked that block up---and was struck by how oddly it was assembled. I like your way better, it looks simpler to do. Beautiful block, btw. Hope to see the whole quilt soon.

salmonsweet 05-17-2010 08:01 AM

Aw such beautiful fabrics. I love looking at this one, the balance of shape and colors and feather textures is just exquisite!

hokieappmom 05-17-2010 08:05 AM

Oh I love your block and the fabric too! Thanks for sharing.

Marjpf 05-17-2010 08:09 AM

Not really....just sewing blocks together in the right order!! Give it a try! Be sure to use light and dark fabrics to get the best "OOMPH"!!

JudyG 05-17-2010 08:48 AM

LucyInTheSky 05-17-2010 11:02 AM

Thanks for sharing. Your picture makes sense for how to assemble it. Their picture and instructions confused me!

Yes, I saw it your way once you gave the hint about the 2 four patches! Then I saw the rectangles on the top and bottom of them! Very easy that way! Also looks like you could piece it as 4 log cabin blocks too!

amandasgramma 05-17-2010 07:42 PM

I thought the same thing. I'm just beginning to be able to "take them apart" in my mind...to figure out how they go together.... My geometry teacher would be so proud. ( or was it algebra???? I don't know - I never paid attention in class!!!)

Pickles 05-17-2010 08:59 PM

I'm book marking this one , it looks easy to do thanks for sharing this pattern with us :D

k_jupiter 05-17-2010 09:36 PM

OK Grannma

You got it very close to being perfectly easy.

Now think it through again. make the whole thing out of strip piecing! Alternate colors as per necessary.

1.) The two outer pieces are nothing but 6 1/2 strips sewn together then cut to 3 1/2 widths. Done.
2.) The top and bottom are a 3 1/2 strip sewn together with a 2 inch strip then cut into 3 1/2 inch widths. You will need a light/dark for each of those.
3.) The inner blocks are two 2 inch strips sewn together and cut into 2 inch widths.
4.) Sew the inners to the top and bottoms.
5.) Sew the tops and bottoms together.
6.) Sew the inner sides together.
7.) Sew the outer pieces to the inner (done) block

This quilt should take no more than two days to complete the top of.

amandasgramma 05-17-2010 09:43 PM

SEEEEE!!! I KNEW it would take an engineer or a math genius (and I'm noteither one!)!!! Yeah - I thought of the strip piecing, but by then it was 11:00 and I couldn't think!!! Thanks!!!!!

Gramof6 05-17-2010 10:04 PM

Amandasgramma this is an absolutely beautiful block. Your fabric choices really makde it pop! Thank You so much for sharing with us. That was sweet of you to do. I am going to have to try this one. To make the whole quilt with this block, would you use just the 2 colors or would they not get lost? If so, how many diff. colos of blocks would you use? Too many might diff. colors of blocks take away from the block itself. Hmmmm got me to thinking now. LOL

Tim, Thank You for making this even more simple to do with your mathematical expertise. lol I appreciate that as math has never been or never will be something I enjoy nor am good at. DH can vouch for me there. lol

rootyr 05-18-2010 02:09 AM
