here is a little string quilt i just finished. i got the idea from an old book i checked out of the library. i love the traditional look of a scrappy quilt.
it is 40 x 40 inches. it is a baby quilt for the great grand baby of a friend.

Izy 09-05-2008 01:41 PM

Very nice nanobirdmo...I like how you have left the strips 'squiffy' and weren't tempted to straighten them all off :D

shellyp 09-05-2008 01:42 PM

That is cute. So brite for a baby.

Jim's Gem 09-05-2008 01:43 PM

Very Pretty, great job!

nanabirdmo 09-05-2008 01:45 PM

thanks izy, i love your word, "squiffy". that's one of the things i love about string quilts. i use every string of every size, and crooked is good.
i also don't separate my scraps into colors or values or genre. i just reach into the scrap box and pull something out. it is very freeing.

KellyPA 09-05-2008 01:48 PM

Very nice!!!!!

I think scrap quilts are especially beautiful when you have a lot of white in the quilt. This one is just lovely! Great job!

I really love that quilt! Did you cut the squares to size after the scrappy rectangles were made? It looks like a quilt you'd find on a bed in a quaint cottage by the ocean. :D

bluebird 09-08-2008 05:49 PM

Love the colors with the white, striking.

nanabirdmo 09-10-2008 09:04 AM

hi barn, thanks for the kind words. this quilt was called PATHS TO PIECE in the book where i found the pattern. isn't that a great name?

to answer your question, yes i string pieced the rectangles and trimmed to 5 x 3 3/8. then i sewed scrap triangles on both ends. then sew larger background triangles to either side and square it up. it takes 4 of these to make 1 block. it was great fun. i too love the scrappy look very much. you all have seen several of my scrap busters and plan to make many more

I love it nana - such a wonderfully clean look to it - "squiffy" and all (I love that term too).

nanabirdmo 09-14-2008 11:45 AM

thanks so much for all your kind words. especially about the machine quilting. i am still pretty tentative at it. it helps to get positive feedback. i thought i'd never get the hang. now if i can just get a table to set my machine down into, maybe i can tackle a larger quilt.

nanabirdmo 09-22-2008 09:31 AM

i have recently had several asking about this one so i thought i would bring it back to the first page. here you go esther.
thank you all for your inspiration.
