Another scrappy backing done

2 Attachment(s)
Just finished piecing a scrappy "backing" for another don't-love-it floppy that has been sitting unloved and unquilted for too many years. I'm going to do a facing with cream colored scraps, giving this the final border.

Originally, I was just going to do another row of 9Ps for the border, but it looked a little boring. I think the pinwheels add a little zing, and I love how the pinwheels look framed- I may have to make a quilt with just those someday! (maybe my next "backing"???)

very nicely done

nativetexan 07-05-2017 06:26 PM

that is really imaginative. Love it!!

Great back and will make a reversible quilt!

Jane Quilter 07-05-2017 09:11 PM

so is this beauty the front and the ugly floppy now the back? It's all in the quilting.....

osewme 07-05-2017 09:54 PM

I really, really like this scrappy. I'm generally not a "scrappy" person but I think the pinwheels border did it for me. Now my question is....how do you keep the front and the pieced back straight & lined up when you get ready to quilt it? I made a quilt once & put a back on that had a pieced strip from some left over front & the back did not come out straight after it was quilted. The front was easy since I could see it while quilting but not so for the back.

Can we see the front of this beautiful back?

BETTY62 07-06-2017 12:07 AM

I love it. It is beautiful.

BrendaK 07-06-2017 02:05 AM

That could be my front anytime. I love it. BrendaK

Very creative. Nicely done.

jmoore 07-06-2017 02:31 AM

What a fun scrappy backing...would love to have seen what the front looked like too. It will feel good to get that floppy out of your pile.

Wanabee Quiltin 07-06-2017 02:52 AM

This is a beautiful backing, way too pretty to be a back.

ArtsyOne 07-06-2017 03:36 AM

What a great pattern for a scrappy! You're right about the pinwheels - they look great with frames.

rryder 07-06-2017 03:39 AM

I really like that-- the pinwheel borders are a great addition!

twinkie 07-06-2017 05:17 AM

Fascinated with this one.

janjanq 07-06-2017 05:39 AM

I would have loved it even without the pinwheels, but the pinwheels definately add Zing! Beautiful!

Went back and re-read your post and just now realized that this is the back? Wish my tops looked that good!

sewbizgirl 07-06-2017 05:43 AM

You're kidding... this is a BACK? I'd put plain backs on the two and make two quilts! Very pretty.

I lay out the batting and the quilt top without the backing and baste a straight stitch using a thread that contrasts with the batting, first along the horizontal and vertical center lines, then about every 12 inches (or around every block) all the way to the edges. I can then flip it over and use the basting as guidelines to position the backing side and do a proper basting thru all three layers. It only takes about an extra hour or so, but is totally worth it to get both sides lined up properly.

Thank you all for the warm, wonderful compliments. Here is the front I'm going to use. It's a pretty top, but, unfortunately, the fabric isn't the best quality, which is why it's been in the unloved box for so long. The shaped edge is why I'm going with a faced edging. It's all basted up, and I hope to start quilting it tonight.

I wish I could, but I have promised myself I would not buy a single inch of fabric until I have my scraps under control. I was a fat quarter junkie, lol, so I just don't have any fabrics in yardages to use as backings.

annette1952 07-06-2017 07:13 AM

Great idea! It is so pretty

osewme 07-06-2017 09:01 AM

Thanks for the info on how you line up the front & the back. I will try that the next time I do something other than plain backing.

Boston1954 07-06-2017 09:04 AM

Beautiful job. Your points are wonderful. And, thanks for the closeup. I enjoy seeing fabrics as though they are in my hand.

Becky's Crafts 07-06-2017 09:48 AM
