I haven't but I sure think it's cute. Too bad I'm too dumb to figure it out. Anybody out there know anything about this cutie?

fred singer 06-18-2012 12:22 PM

I 'm not familar with the design

Jennie and Me 06-18-2012 12:24 PM

Well...it looks like a combo of a 9 patch and a snow-ball. It is cute!

moonwork42029 06-18-2012 12:25 PM

Snowball block with 9 patch in between them is what it looks like to me

9 patch and snowballs - the cream is the "snowball" corners and the "X" part of the 9-patch.

Liz92B 06-18-2012 12:40 PM

looks like too many 'Y' intersections for my tastes {giggle}

#1piecemaker 06-18-2012 12:47 PM

Whatever it is, its pretty! I do see the nine patches and I think the other is the snowball. Mixed the way they are, it looks awesome.

QuiltE 06-18-2012 12:58 PM

What a lovely quilt!
Do you know anything about it's story?

... when you look at the way the seams are puffed ... it almost looks like the large colours and background are put together in a simple block form. And then the 9Ps added after, looking as though they are appliqued on.

And agreed ... snowballs with 9Ps would do the job with all set on point.

There are no Y intersections on this quilt. It is all straight seams and just sewing squares. The snowball block can easily be done putting a square in each corner and sewing on the diagonal. There is also a bit of applique in the borders.

More than likely it is just lack of good pressing during the construction. If the maker did assemble it the way you suggest that made it a ton more work than it needed to be. The same look can definitely be achieved by alternating a simple 9 patch a with a simple snowball. The only applique I see are the leaf shapes in the border that overlap on to the blocks along the outer edge.

dakotamaid 06-18-2012 01:07 PM

I agree, snowball and 9 patch. The design comes from the placement of fabrics. Very pretty.:)

Funny, I read this thread, went to draw it up, and when I got back a couple minutes later - there was the answer already! But, anywhere here is the drawing.

mighty 06-18-2012 01:30 PM

Agree, snow ball and 9 patch.

nativetexan 06-18-2012 02:27 PM

it looks like it was set on point. or at least the blocks are going across the quilt in the photo. i agree, nine patches and snow ball blocks (corner triangles match the light background in the nine patch blocks. then some "petals" are appliqued on the quilt.

Diane007 06-18-2012 04:09 PM

plus add the applique around the outside

That is an awesome table runner. gammatyr did an unique job of drawing it out.

Lilrain 06-18-2012 04:40 PM

I believe it is a snowball/9 patch and the reason you don't recognize it is that it appears in the picture to be on point. Cock your head around a little and I think you will see it

QBQuilts gave the answer. but it needs to be set on point

I agree with the others, 9 patch and snowballs. What I really like is the chicken dish, I collect chicken dishes like that and also chicken candy dishes.

irishrose 06-18-2012 07:58 PM

It's a thicker batting than we are accustomed to seeing and not well pressed before quilting. It may be hand quilted and there seems to be buttons in the center where the blocks come together. I have a SB and 9P waiting for binding for a prayer quilt and another on the machine being quilted. That one does look different photographed from an angle.

fatquarters 06-18-2012 08:42 PM

Well thanks so much quiltnan and grammatjr for those. I was just yesterday thinking about this pattern and wondering about color placements , and i think this post by rebbeca helped me visualize better. isnt this pattern just so different depending on how you place light and dark. I had done a googgle search and most of the quilts with this pattern use a light for the snowball. My plan was to use a dark like this, and now I am more confident my plan would work!

tesspug 06-18-2012 11:02 PM

Comes from this book. http://www.amazon.com/Simple-Charm-P.../dp/1604680660

quilterella 06-19-2012 02:16 AM

If you look right behind the chicken bowl, by the red leaf, you can see the nine patch and snow ball more distinctly. The quilt is beautiful.

catladyquilts 06-19-2012 04:14 AM

Don't know the design but I sure like it.

kateyb 06-19-2012 05:26 AM

To me it looks like a square in a square, and a 9 patch set on the diagonal. It looks more complicated than it is because of the way the cream color is used. It would actually be fairly easy to make. I love how it looks. It may be a way to use up a lot of scraps.

Stacey 06-19-2012 05:10 PM

This is a really adorable pattern. Especially cute as a scrappy.

Nancy is your drawing from a computer program?

KathyPhillips 06-20-2012 05:40 AM

Beautiful! I love it! I saw it on another thread here a few days ago, or one that is similar.

luci4 06-20-2012 05:50 AM

Just a snowball and 9 patch with applique vines and leaves in border. Beautiful little quilt.

MamaHen 06-20-2012 06:06 AM

Perfect for those left over scrapes!

BuzzinBumble 06-20-2012 06:30 AM

Well I'm liking it and I'll join your "too dumb" club too Rebecca! :p Good thing we can turn to the experts here on the QB! As soon as I saw your great diagrams Nan, Gramma and Suzan I thought, now why couldn't i see that?!

It is an easy quilt to put together since the nine patch can be stripe pieced. I used it, larger block of course, to make a couple of baby quilts for gifts.

Flo_rancher 06-20-2012 06:48 AM

Yes have seen the ninepatches and snowballs several times.. Love the effect..especailly in scrappy..

there are no "Y" intersections in this, just snowball blocks and 9 patches. OH and the tiny leaves appliqued around as well...really cute, but the blocks must be 4"...
