Okay, so maybe I do need to get a template. I couldn't find one at my LQS or JoAnn's. I guess I will have to buy one off of the internet. It still looks okay, but I want it to be 12. It makes the colors come out right.

Prism99 01-05-2011 11:10 AM

I like it the way it is! :D Unique. Subtle. Individual.

I love it! Why do you want to change it?

Cyn 01-05-2011 11:23 AM

Beautiful!

bluteddi 01-05-2011 11:24 AM

I love the uniqueness........

It's perfect

Grama Lehr 01-05-2011 11:34 AM

I don't see any problems with it. . . . :-o

nativetexan 01-05-2011 11:42 AM

look in quilterscache.com for block patterns with templates. you should find one or more. good luck.

butterflywing 01-05-2011 11:43 AM

if you think you'll be using it over and over, then get the ruler. but remember the ruler comes in all *'s. so, if you want one that makes a 12-part plate, that's one ruler. if you want to change to a 10-part plate, that's a different one. and so on. it can get pricey.

so, here's what you can do for free. draw an oversized circle.
find the exact center. it has to be precise. the best thing to do is to draw the circle with a compass. that gives you a perfect circle and the exact center (the hole). draw a line through the circle passing right through the hole, using a fine-line pen or pencil. measuring with a 90* square, mark another line through the circle, right through the center. you should have 2 lines forming a cross, with the ends going straight out the circle.

now, carefully, measure off 2 dots on the circumference of the circle between the cross lines. draw lines from the center 'hole' to the outside 'dots'. that will give you 3 segments that will each be the same exact size. if you do that in each quarter of the circle, you will end up with 12 segments, all equal in size.

using the same method, you can divide the circle into any number of sections. remember to add seam allowances. trace and recut in mylar.

to my way of thinking, it allows changes in the number of petals you might want to use in other projects, depending on how many fabrics you want to showcase.

Check back at JoAnn's. they had two different dresden plate templates when I was there, as I bought one!

Latrinka 01-05-2011 12:17 PM

No, never have, my dresden's have 20. That one sure is beautiful, tho!

carhop 01-05-2011 01:27 PM

if you look at the pattern on the left side you have 2 of the pepermint candy pattern one on each side

littlehud 01-05-2011 02:00 PM

I think it looks wonderful. I wouldn't change a thing.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 01-05-2011 04:02 PM

My template makes it come out with 20 petals.

donnajean 01-05-2011 04:25 PM

Can you not draw it out & make your own template. My 1st sewing class was for sampler quilt & the pattern for the Dresden Plate was made out of cardboard from a cereal box.

BMP 01-05-2011 04:37 PM

I think it looks wonderful, I didnt pick up on any errors until you told us what was off...
Butterflywing, thanks for the idea on how to make your own templates, I never thought of your method.

I never found a template at Joanns either I had to order from Missouri Quilt Company.
One I have not seen either is a 90* template

Lucymae 01-05-2011 04:44 PM

I like it. It's odd! haha

I'm impressed you made your own pattern.

Polly C 01-05-2011 05:02 PM

I did just the other day!! I used a template I used to make a complete quilt with a couple of years ago. I was only making one block this time & guess what.......I needed another petal to make it lay flat. I used fabric different than what was already in the plate - something that blended & I have to look hard myself to find it!! I'm leaving it. Still not sure what happened but it has to have been that I used too wide a seam this time.

the corner of any square ruler is 90*. so if you lay one edge on a straight line, the other "leg" of the corner gives you the 90* angle. all you have to do is draw a line against that second leg, crossing the first line, and you form a cross, with 4 - 90* angles coming together in the center. just make sure that everything goes right across that center hole.

i don't mind spending money for notions that i know i'll be using many times, but this isn't one of them. every time i made a dresden plate it had a different number of petals, so after the first template, i started making my own.

purple_butterfly 01-05-2011 11:33 PM

It's unique

I ment to write a 60* template...

Nursesews 01-06-2011 04:20 AM

I really like it  I have the ruler than requires 20, would like to do one with fewer metals. Thanks for sharing :D

Pegleg 01-06-2011 04:43 AM

You have something unique. There are quilters out there that would pay good money for YOUR 13 blade template. I personally think it is awesome.

peabee 01-06-2011 05:08 AM

love that argyle!

Here is my 13+plate story..Years ago, before rotary cutters and plastic templates I moved from Colorado to Oregon. I could only take what I could pack in my old Mercury Cougar. So knowing I would not get to take a lot of my fabrics, I cut out many quilts for later assembly. From my scrap bin I cut out about a dozen 12 piece plates using a cardboard template. Well fast-forward to my new home and I start stitching up those plates. It seems that my cardboard template had shrunk with each pass of the pencil around it's edges. By the time I got to last of them I was having to add and adjust plates to make it all lay flat. I ended up with lots of 13, 14 and one 15 bladed plates. Since I did not have access to the original pile of scraps They were some funny looking Dresden's. However luckily my first grandson had come along and he was more than happy to take this brightly scrapped quilt off my hands. I think it got loved to death over his growing up years. Now I have lots of plastic templates and all my blades are uniform, but that off kilter Dresden is still a happy memory.

Yep, that is what makes it 13 instead of 12 petals.

I did look there, first, but theirs was a rounded petal and I wanted a pointed petal. Went back yesterday, printed it out, and adapted it to a pointed petal. We will see what that does. Thanks for the website reminder.

That is so funny, because I made my template out of a cereal box. I think I got my angles off a little, and y'all know how that works in quilting. I little off times X equals a bunch off when you get to the end!!

shopaholic97 01-06-2011 10:45 AM

I love it!!

montanajan 01-06-2011 10:46 AM

Looks fine the way it is - keep it going in the next blocks too - unique & pretty.

Nice story - there is always someone to appreciate what we deem not-quite-right!

fancifrock 01-06-2011 11:32 AM

The Dresden template that I bought is adjustable so you don't have to buy different sizes. It makes 8" down to 1" dresden sections. I purchased it at Nancy's Notions. The only thing I don't like is that it makes the pointed sections and is a little complicated to make the true rounded dresden.

4girlsmimi 01-06-2011 12:35 PM

I agree with the others. It is great just like it is.

Sharonsews 01-06-2011 12:54 PM

Looks good to me.

Tweety2911 01-06-2011 04:01 PM

You did a great job on your Dresden, it's not in the amount of petals, it's what you do with them lol. I love it!

Pamper 01-06-2011 04:04 PM

I bought mine online and am very happy. However, mine uses 20 petals. I have made one with 4 colors and another with 5.

Friendly Quilter 01-06-2011 04:11 PM

I had the same problem, so I just went with the 13, Your is coming out beautiful, so I would stick with the 13.

madamekelly 01-06-2011 04:52 PM

If I tried to do this on purpose, you can bet it would not work. Nice!

Lucy90 01-06-2011 05:41 PM

It is very nice and I wouldn't change a thing.
