You need to post this poem beside your quilt if you hang it on the wall:
Grandma's Apron I don't think our kids know what an apron is. The principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect the dress underneath, because she only had a few, it was easier to wash aprons than dresses and they used less material, but along with that, it served as a potholder for removing hot pans from the oven. It was wonderful for drying children's tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty ears… From the chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched eggs to be finished in the warming oven. When company came, those aprons were ideal hiding places for shy kids. And when the weather was cold grandma wrapped it around her arms. Those big old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent over the hot wood stove. Chips and kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in that apron. From the garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables. After the peas had been shelled, it carried out the hulls. In the fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that had fallen from the trees. When unexpected company drove up the road, it was surprising how much furniture that old apron could dust in a matter of seconds. When dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the porch, waved her apron, and the men-folk knew it was time to come in from the fields to dinner. It will be a long time before someone invents something that will replace that 'old-time apron' that served so many purposes. REMEMBER: Grandma used to set her hot baked apple pies on the window sill to cool. Her granddaughters set theirs on the window sill to thaw. They would go crazy now trying to figure out how many germs were on that apron. I never caught anything from an apron…But Love. (Author Unknown) |
What a darling quilt. I love the aprons, where did you ever get that cute pattern. I have two very dear friends who love to cook. Neither quilt or really sew for that matter. I have been wanting to make a quilt for both and do one first for my friend here in town, but just couldn't think of the appropriate pattern. I would love to make both a quilt like this, would you mind someone else using your pattern? I would love to get this pattern. Coukd you PM me as to where you found it or did you make it up yourself? Gerbie

Too Cute!!!

Just adorable. Is the redwork and embroidery by hand or machine?
seasaw, thats a great poem. Thanks for sharing it!
There isn't any redwork. I traced the pattern with a red micron pigma pen.

I truly love these aprons. Are they really aprons or vintage fabrics to look like aprons. Great quilt.
I made one just like it, got my blocks as block of the month, in Tuson Arizona, and yes it did take lots of time, but I did the applique's by hand, and then stippled it by machine. Just gave it to a friend for her birthday, she cried, had been pestering me to sell it to her for months. It was more fun to give it to her then to sell it to her.
I totally agree with the comment about marketing the pattern. I would love to buy one if you do want to sell any copies.

this is the Lori Holt pattern that I have...can't wait to make it! I think it'll be a fun "camping" project to take with me when we go camping...it's called "Grandma's Kitchen" Don't know why it posted as a download... :?
What an adorable quilt!!You did a fabulous job on it!!If you can't decide what to do with it I'd be glad to give it a home!!
Your right it is a Lori Holt pattern, and I paid $50 for all the blocks and the pattern, as all the fabric and rick rack etc was included, just needed to buy the border material and back so $24 would be right for just the pattern, very detailed pattern and easy to follow, but lots of tiny pieces, so like detail if you decide to make one.
That's just too cute. Would be great hanging in a vintage kitchen.
Absolutely PRECIOUS !!! And....... I have the perfect wall to display it ;) Soooo cute.

I was thinking - - in your town, if you have a local nursing home? They are always looking for things to hang around for the people to look at. Can't you just see those little ladies sitting around your wall hanging, telling their stories of their aprons and the ones their mamas wore? If you wanted to, I am thinking that you could just loan the nursing home the wall hangings you are creating, that other one you made from handkerchiefs and lace ... someone may offer you enough $ that you couldn't say no, but in any event, you would make a big difference in the lives of our senior citizens <wave> |
I just recently received about a dozen vintage aprons in a box of material I had gotten. Been wondering what I could do with them. Love your quilt.
