I just realized that I never posted this!! I'm working on a UFO per month. This one I finished early January. It's for a friend who got back from Afghanistan about a month ago. I already mailed it to him and it's on his couch.
A zillion years ago, I started a similar quilt for my friend in Army ROTC. I bought waaaaaaay too much fabric so I made a 2nd, almost identical quilt, which is this one. It's my own pattern. |
Great Job  And THANK you for appreciating the military . Glad your friend is back and enjoying the quilt
|
I'm happy I was able to find that camo fabric. Surprisingly difficult (though there were a few sites with pink camo...)
I'm glad he's back too. He did 9 months or so. I had another friend who did 15 months in Iraq. Really tough on them... |
LOVE LOVE LOVE it! You did an awesome job!!!!
|
Very nice.

Its very striking :!:

The quilt is wonderful and an inspiration! My goal this year is to make one red, white, and blue quilt to donate to the local veteran's group. My nephew just joined the Marines, so I thought it was a fitting goal this year!
I also like your idea of trying to finish one UFO per month--you truly are inspirational! |
I love it, maybe I'm being biased seeing that I am a Army Veteran!

I went on fabshophop.com and did their search for army and camouflage fabric ("camoflague", did get a few hits). I ended up on a website that had most of the fabrics, though it's so long ago, I can't remember where. They had fabrics for all the branches. I was super careful, I didn't want to use Marine fabric on accident... I know the Army guys wouldn't be happy :D :D Per searching just now, it looks like the Army tanks/helicopter one is a Robert Kaufman. |
Thank u sooooooo much for sharing! Can't wait to shop for materials and 'git' busy.
|
love this, I want to make one
|
I just got some Navy fabric in along with some basic red/white/blue. Thanks for giving me some ideas.
Great job! |
What a great idea.I hope you won't mind if I take a few ideas from your quilt. I had purchased (years ago) a panel of the Navy emblem. Was going to make a pillow for my son.....a Navy vet. But now I think that a wall hanging would be nice. Thanks for the inspiration........mj

Great job, great quilt. I am sure it will be treasured. You have given me an idea for DH, he was in the Navy. I have a neice who is currently in the Navy, just finishing up boot camp, That would be a nice gift for her also.
Thanks for the idea. |
what a smashing man's quilt!

I have 3 kids and they all went into the military. My daughter was in the navy and did 2 tours in the Medirtrainian waters, My son was in the Army Special Forces as a Airborn Ranger, and my youngest son is currently in the Air Force as a Air Traffic Controller. My brother was also in the Army as a blackhawk pilot and he still is but now as a Army Chaplin. Love to see anything Military!! Great Job. PM'ed you.

Great quilt. I may have to 'steal' your idea.
|
Great quilt. I am working on a red, white, and blue quilt for "Quilts of Valor". They are given to a returning injured service man or woman. They have volunteer long arm quilters that will do the quilting. You have to make the top, supply the material for the back (the la quilter furnishes the batting) and when you get it back from the laq, you make a bag and label for the quilt, then send it to the organization. Oh, I forgot. You write a journal as you make the quilt, they say the recipients really enjoy that also.

Thank you all for the positive feedback. Please help yourself to my idea! The fabric is from 3+ years ago, so I haven't had much luck directing anyone to where I got it. Here's all the information I have:
I did a search here for "Army" and got some hits - http://www.fabshophop.com/invsearch/isearch.asp and http://www.fabric.com/SearchResults2...3-26a376046a5e It's really just one of those things that you search on various search engines until you find fabrics. I don't really have enough to make a kit of. Please help yourself to the picture! I'd send you the Excel pattern if I still had it, but I lost it when my computer died :( I started with the center square (which it includes the red stripe on the fabric). The first row of black/green stars is 3 1/2" (all unfinished measurements), the tanks, flags, words, and camo are all 6 1/2". The 2nd star fabric border is 2 1/2". There's not a whole lot of fancy-ness, just start with square and keep adding borders :D I'm happy to answer more questions - just let me know |
thanks Lucy in the Sky.......
My son was in the Navy as I mentioned before......and my dad was a career man in the Army.......Son was named for my dad and always wondered if he (dad) would have felt bad that son joined the Navy.......he definitely would not have cared.....a service man is a service man/woman and they are all servicing us. I think that when I do get around to this quilt, I may just include both and then just might also include something from the Air Force...since hubby served with them... Thanks for the OK to copy your ideas.....MaryJane |
I love it! Where did you get the fabric? I'd love to do one for my son, who's in the Army and has done 5 tours of duty in Iraq!
Kind Regards, MaryAnna |
Good show!
I own most of the fabric you have displayed, and have not read your whole thread, but what is that fabric, second to the last on the top and bottom? Did you show a close up? Having asked, I will now go back and look <g> ... thank you for your support for our military ... your thoughtfulness extends back many generations to the women who knitted socks for George Washington's Continental Army, gathered clothing and other supplies. <wave> |
awesome
|
I love that ... I'd love to find some similar material ... only in Marines ... as my husband used to serve in the Marines
|
wow you did a great job on that. thank you for sharing. God bless. Penny
|
