I am doing a BOM and this is my first completed block.

The central motif of each block is an Australian animal and is supposed to be appliqued and embroidered but being a painter, I found I wanted to paint my koala instead.

I have used a lot of poetic licence and my block differs greatly from the class project but I am gaining a lot of inspiration and embroidery knowledge from attending the class.

I have almost finished my second block which is a kangaroo.

DeeCee, is there much difference painting on quilting fabric than canvas? Your quilt is going to be gorgeous. I appreciate your embroidery skills, too.

Deecee 10-16-2010 07:11 PM

Thanks for your kind comments everyone.

I haven't done very much embroidery up till now. I am way behind with my blocks because I sit with a needle in one hand and my embroidery book in the other, plus I am naturally just a slow worker. There are 13 blocks in the BOM but if I get too far behind I am quite comfortable with just doing the ones that I like the most for a wall hanging.

Craftybear - I use acrylics (Jo Sonja mainly) and just brush mix in a fabric medium as I go. I free handed the koala but had lots of pics to copy from.

Sheila Elaine - There isn't much difference but I do very little work on canvas - not my choice of surface.

Here's a link to some of my stuff - right at the bottom of the page. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-50062-6.htm
The first two are glassed and framed pieces but I actually painted on the backing board in the frame, the third is a turned wood platter.

I have nearly finished the kangaroo block and will post it when I have.

Sheila Elaine 10-16-2010 07:21 PM

DeeCee, the painted turned bowl w/roses looks a lot like the China Painting a friend of mine does on tiny tea cups, saucers & plates. You are so talented as a Painter, but also as a quilter/embroider. My bonnet is off to Ya!

trisha 10-16-2010 08:07 PM
