Baby quilt-1 of 9 ocean bargello

3 Attachment(s)
I have nine baby quilts to complete. So far i have two done now. It's taking me even longer with a toddler and my almost three month old but it keeps me sane too! This is an ocean inspired bargello using hoffman precut jellyroll batiks. They were not cut uniform and i will not buy precuts again unless they are by Moda. Unfortunately i didn't realize they were not cut well until i went to put my pieced and cut strips back together. I used a seahorse non-pill fleece for backing and warm and natural batting. It is hand quilted with wave like swirls in the main section and bubbles growing smaller and more clustered towards the upper right corner in the border. I also added a flange around the inner part of the border. I forgot how painful hand quilting batiks can be as it has been awhile since i hand quilted a batik lap quilt i made. Lesson relearned. Anyhoodles here is my baby ocean bargello...

i like your colors!!!!

Maureen NJ 06-04-2014 05:33 PM

Very nice. Love the colors and quilting. You are ambitious! I remember seeing a thread here about the precuts and Hoffman. I'll try to find it.

Cybrarian 06-04-2014 05:50 PM

Your baby ocean quilt is Gorgeous!

Maureen NJ 06-04-2014 05:56 PM

I found it. Stumped......... Is the name of the thread. Do an advance search and check the 1st and 4th reply. Interesting!

serenitybygrace 06-04-2014 06:03 PM

Very pretty and cozy quilt.

Didn't work with doing an advanced search but it is # 72 under main section. Hoffman employees Bali people to cut their precuts and now, after so many negative comments about their in accuracy, they have put in lasers so the precuts going forward should be better.

StickyN 06-04-2014 06:42 PM

Very pretty quilt. Great colors and I love your hand quilting.

LindaM 06-04-2014 07:05 PM

Beautiful! Love the colours and the quilting, well done!

I've unfortunately had only very spotty opportunities to check in here, but I do recall this tip from a while ago for dealing with uneven ... http://www.quiltingboard.com/blogs/s...ips-b2749.html. Good to hear they're now being laser cut.

jenOSU 06-04-2014 07:48 PM

Fantastic hand quilting!

Grandma Peg 06-04-2014 08:30 PM

Very pretty quilt. That's sad they weren't cut properly.

Oh that is good news! I was wondering as the rolls and such are now labeled "hello my name is" and have a description of what the cut actually is. There are some beautiful new color ways coming out and this is great news!!

Thank you all very much for your kind words! It isn't easily visible but i also hand quilted the name of the child in the bottom border in orange to look like coral. I'm so glad to have this one done and to be able to check 'bargello' off my must try list :)

Anael 06-05-2014 12:25 AM

Love your baby bargello and love the quilting!!

gabeway 06-05-2014 04:35 AM

Very nice work. I remember the days of sewing when having a toddler and an infant. Challenging sometimes.

Yes my mother, also a quilter, says not to be surprised if i find less and less time for awhile. It can be frustrating to not be able to enjoy my hobby but my kiddos are worth it :) and i know soon enough i'll be missing these years and hearing my son remind me he's a door bell (adorable) and my sweet Adelaide is starting to jibber jabber and smile so much...i stick to much smaller projects for now and since i love handwork i don't have to spend a lot of time setting up/cleaning off my table. Maybe i'll even get the other 7 baby quilts i need to do all done by the end of the year too!! Here's hoping lol!

Such a beautiful little quilt.

CherryPie 06-05-2014 03:19 PM

I love your bargello. Some day I'm going to get brave enough to do one. I love your colors. Thank you for sharing. Anxious to see the next 7!!!!

barri1 06-05-2014 03:26 PM

It came out great despite the imperfect cuts..
The kids come first, and everything else has to take a back burner.. Enjoy them. They are growing way too fast.
Where on the island are you? I'm in the Five towns near JFK..

ging10ging 06-05-2014 03:34 PM

Very pretty colors love the Bargello's. Sue

joyce888 06-05-2014 05:29 PM

Thank you very much! I am just over the county border in west bab but i'm a
transplant from the hudson valley so i'm not sure where your location actually is lol! My husband was born in corona and moved to nassau as a young child. We met online and i moved down here after our wedding. After 4.5 years of living here i'm still confused where things are!

Your quilt is lovely, and your creativity and craftmanship are wonderful. I love the bubbles. All this with two little ones! Good for you!

matraina 06-06-2014 04:55 AM

Love the quilt and the colors.

#1piecemaker 06-06-2014 05:30 AM

Very pretty!!Can't wait to see the others!

ManiacQuilter2 06-06-2014 05:42 AM

Still looks very pretty. If there were problems with the widths of the strips, it really doesn't show. Someone recently posted that Hoffman is changing from actual people cutting the strips to lasers cutting. I would contact them directly to inform them of the problem you had. They have always been know for their great customer service. Their offices are located in Mission Viejo, CA

nanna-up-north 06-06-2014 05:48 AM

The baby that is getting your quilt must be a special one indeed. The quilt is lovely..... nicely done. And, I remember how difficult it was to work on sewing when my kids were little..... but you have the right attitude. Enjoy them while they are little, they grow up way too fast.

cpcarolyn 06-06-2014 05:51 AM

Pretty quilt.

EmiliasNana 06-06-2014 06:31 AM

These are my favorite colors and your bargello shows them off wonderfully. Your quilting is so even and perfect. I don't know how you get so much done with small children but my hat is off to you. Sometimes I think I was more organized when I had kids and worked, than I am now retired. Slower too LOL

Lori S 06-06-2014 07:10 AM

You picked wonderful batik colors for this quilt! Something about bargello and batik ..they just go so well together.

MargeD 06-06-2014 08:56 AM

It's a beautiful quilt and your stitches are so nice and even. Great job and great quilt.

Taughtby Grandma 06-06-2014 08:57 AM

The colors are really pretty, you did a good job on this.

barri1 06-06-2014 12:01 PM

I am not that far from you.. Probably 15-20 miles.. I am west of you. Almost near the queens border, but south near the Rockaway peninsula. I go to the Joann's stores out there on occasion, and the Big Lots on Sunrise. There is a small sewing machine repair shop near the Big Lots that I use. The guy is a sweetheart. He will repair the machines, and go out of his way for you. His prices are insanely low..
