Hi All,

Well, if you saw my post about my 'Busy Day' on Saturday, ( http://www.quiltingboard.com/posts/list/11213.page ) you know I have decided to do a baby quilt for my friends baby's (little girl called Charlotte Margaret) Baptism, which is this coming Sunday. Quite ambitious for a rookie like me!

Progress so far:

Saturday 13th Sept : Amy Butler charm packs purchased
Sunday 14th Sept : All charms pieced in 9 patch blocks, cut, and arranged in Disappearing 9 Patch pattern. Started to sew them together when my sewing machine throws a wobbly and won't sew anymore - Eek!
Monday 15th Sept : Old machine comes to the rescue - quilt top now all pieced together, pressed, squared up and ready for next step. Quilt inspectors have inspected and approve (see pics!). Batting already purchased, will be going to Hobbycraft on Weds to buy fabric for borders and backing.

Phew!

Am worried that the colours are not 'girly' enough for a baby girl, but her parents prefer modern things to traditional, so I hope it is a good compromise if I use pale pink for the border to girl it up a bit, and maybe green for the binding?

No plans for tomorrow, Tuesdays I spend the evening with my parents, so look out on Wednesday for another update!

You're doing a great job! You'll make it! I love those Amy Butler fabrics!

Don't worry, that pin cushion they have found most certainly is never left unattended. They are such 'chewers', I am very vigilant about leaving anything out that that could harm them. Also I have lost a few sets of iPod headphones and cell phone chargers at quite a cost!

I think it is great for a girl!!! Very cute!! What is up with that new machine? Hope you can get it fixed soon!!!

Izy 09-15-2008 12:53 PM

I'm not sure whats wrong with my machine Melissa, it just kept snarling the thread up underneath where the bobbin is, like it was tangled on something, can't figure out why. I will have another look at it when I have time. Thank goodness for my old one.

Hi Izy, I haven't decided how to quilt it yet. I haven't even tried free motion yet, so it will have to be straight line quilting, but as the new walking foot only fits my new (currently out of action) machine it will be interesting to see what I can do. Mind you, I didn't do too badly with my old machine on my last quilt, and that was when I hadn't even heard of a walking foot!

The cats have been very naughty tonight, there was a daddy long legs in here earlier, and when they couldn't catch it they decided to take their enerygy out on the quilt top!

Mary have you got an 'open toe' foot for your old machine, I do alot of my quilting with that and it's so much easier to see where you are going, feed dogs up by the way...heres a link to a topic I posted ages ago...

Hope this helps :D

No, I haven't, but I can def see how it would be better. Am still learning about the different types of feet for machines, am cautious of buying them (they are at least £10 each here) until I am sure of what I need and what will be useful to me until I am more experienced.

Izy 09-15-2008 01:26 PM

I was fortunate enough to have one come with my machine which I bought from our leader who was upgraded to an all singing dancing Husqvarna... :D

zyxquilts 09-15-2008 01:44 PM

Mary, that top is very nice! Definitely 'feminine' if not 'girly' :D
Your quilt inspectors sure did go to town checking it all out for you, didn't they LOL. I'll be looking forward to Weds. pics!

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 09-15-2008 02:44 PM

OOOOh boy, I hope your inspectors don't have their claws!

Looks very nice, by the way!

Harmony 09-15-2008 03:42 PM

Your quilt is very modern, but still very girly! Great job! I think your cats would agree!

Jim's Gem 09-15-2008 04:53 PM

Your quilt top looks great. Since they like modern, I think it is plenty feminine! Great job. I mostly quilt diagonals across my quilts, havn't gotten the free motion quilting down yet either. It will look wonderful whatever you do. :)

SewSew2 09-15-2008 05:41 PM

Love the black kitty....he or she seems so interested in what the other cat is doing. Waiting for a chance to join in. LOL

Marcia 09-15-2008 06:47 PM

Mary-I love the Amy Butler fabrics and I think they are very girly. You might get this quilt done a lot faster if you did not have so much "help"!! :D But, your kitties are adorable-makes me miss mine.

GMA 09-15-2008 08:01 PM

I quilt baptismal quilts for church and I love your bright pattern for the front. I like to keep the quilt 'baptismal white' so I border in white and usually back in white. It's such a wonderful thing for u to do. Good luck

reneebobby 09-16-2008 02:47 AM

Very pretty quilt.

I've had that problem with the bobbin thread and I sometimes end up with pieces of thread up under the needle so I have to tear apart and pull out the thread then it's back to normal. Hope this helps

Bevanger 09-16-2008 05:18 AM

oooooooooo pretty :D

Thats a good idea, I might see what nice white fabrics for the backing they have when I go to the store tomorrow. I like the idea of white - there is plenty colour on the front I think!

tlrnhi 09-16-2008 05:52 AM

I think it's perfect!
The kittys think it is too!
I love that black one you have.
I had one, Spooky, he was my lover. Was 15 when he left us :(
Miss that boy!

Kyiav10 09-16-2008 08:13 AM

gcathie 09-16-2008 11:09 PM

Looks mighty fine...sounds like you got it all figured out! Good luck

PrettyKitty 09-17-2008 12:00 AM

Haha! What a surprise, you weren't expecting a Tuesday update were you!? I was out for dinner with my parents and my brother last night, so although I couldn't do any work on the quilt itself, I have however planned the colours I want to buy tonight to use for the borders and binding. Using a photo of the quilt and Excel, I came up with the attached pic to try and visualise how I wanted the colours. I tried different variations of the borders/binding colours, but I like this combination best. I am going to choose a white fabric for the backing, and will be using varigated pink thread to quilt it with, so from the back, with the pink binding, it will be all pink and white, which I think is a nice, simple contrast to the crazy colourful front! I am going to Hobbycraft straight after work today, and I have brought the quilt top with me so I can pick the fabrics that go with it best.
Have a good day y'all!

Craftybug 09-17-2008 03:26 AM

Is going to be very pretty Mary. You go girl

Well, I went to Hobbycraft after work tonight, and now have the fabric and satin ribbon that I am going to use for the borders, binding and backing. It is all in the washing machine as we speak, am itching to get going but I don't have a tumble dryer so I will have to be patient and carry on tomorrow when it has all dried.

The girl in the shop who cut my fabrics was very generous with her measurements. And on the pink fabric after she measured what I wanted, there was only about a quarter metre left on the bolt so she said I may as well have it as they probably wouldn't sell it anyway! Yaay! My very small stash is growing!

Enjoy the pics, I hope you are all well this evening.

White for the backing, pink for the binding, green and yellow for the borders

Uh-oh...Satchmo likes the green satin!

Excuse me Kitchen, where do you think you are going with that!?

Izy 09-17-2008 12:05 PM

Lovely fabrics, and you ARE very lucky to be given the end of roll, THAT has never happened to me :(

I think Kitchen is a very cheaky chappie taking off with the ribbon, great pictures :D

Thursday night - borders added, quilt basted (I LOVE basting spray!) and quilting started before my eyes started to go wobbly at about 10.30pm...itching to carry on tonight!

Quilt4u 09-19-2008 01:48 AM

Beautiful quilt. But I don't think you are going to be able to give it away . Your quilt ploice have taken a likeing to it. Looks like they have clamed it for their own from day 1. Have to make another. Just for them.

Celeste 09-19-2008 02:10 AM

Very nice quilt, ADORABLE kitties! Give them some loves from me, please!

reneebobby 09-19-2008 02:32 AM

tlrnhi 09-19-2008 05:05 AM

Gorgeous! You did a great job! That will be one happy baby!

kathyd 09-20-2008 02:25 PM

I love the modern "baby" look. I will have to look into some charm packs for my nieces baby. You did a great job. It is amazing how cats think that EVERYTHING belongs to them.

sewnsewer2 09-20-2008 02:29 PM

How sweet! That turned out very pretty.

Your cats are just too darned cute.
