Baby quilt

Originally, the idea was that I was going to hand quilt it, but I quickly discovered that I am not a hand-quilter! I bow down to those who can hand-quilt and have the enormous patience required!

So, I machine quilted it, using a stencil for every other strip and a serpentine stitch in between, with FMQ pebbles for the rest.

It was my first attempt at putting on a binding by machine and turned out a little rough...I think I may go back over it with a decorative stitch to tack down the areas that aren't flat.

That is a nice easy pattern for baby quilts. Like your colour choices.

Tartan 05-20-2016 05:40 AM

Cute quilt! Maybe some rick rack in bright green or orange would look good on your edge.

I agree with Tartan. Rick Rack looks great on any kid's quilt and can hide any mistakes.

How do you keep rick rack from folding over when it's laundered? My experience is that it kinda rolls up instead of staying flat.

Have you tried Machine Binding with a Flange? Its super easy and totally eliminates this problem. (Lots of tutorials online.) I also love the finished look. Its the only way I do binding! I'm attaching a scan of the corner of one of my chicken quilts. The striped fabric is the back view and in the front you can see the green binding with the rust-gold flange. Don't give up until you try it!

A very bright and happy quilt, great colors!

Karamarie 05-21-2016 04:36 AM

Nice bright colors for a child - good job.

waltonalice 05-21-2016 04:52 AM

Did you see Kitsie's baby quilt with the blanket stitches holding down the front of the binding? It looks doable. That said, I love you quilt, both the fabrics and the quilting. Lucky baby.

jmoore 05-21-2016 06:19 AM

Pretty little quilt... You did a great job with your FMQ. I have only tried one machine binding on a baby quilt... I think it takes practice. : (

I'm not sure there is a "pattern". If I'm mistaken, someone please correct me.

I saw it on here, I think, (Darn brain injury messes with my memory), and just made it up to fit the size I wanted....36x45".

I thought about this, because I've done it before, but I thought I'd try just the straightforward binding that people talk about. Next time, I think I'll do the flange again.
I was thinking I might just bind it again...no rules against that, are there?

I agree with Tartan, some nice bright rickrack would be perfect & easily cover any imperfections. Love your quilt. Super cute.
