Baby shower gift for my neice

3 Attachment(s)
This shower was last August, the baby was born in October 2014. Obviously it takes me a while to post pics!
I used a free pattern http://www.mccallsquilting.com/quick...ttern_Download

I still have trouble sometimes getting seams lined up so to me, this pattern was perfect. The blocks were pieced in a random pattern, so though the corners had to match, the sections did not have to match the block next to it.

I figured the quilt was for a baby so experimented with fmq. I found a free coloring book online and used those images to stitch throughout. They kind of looked like a kid drew them so my fmq didn't have to be perfect. The parents live out in the country and have a pond, so the bugs and critters and stuff were perfect. I figured the Mom would get lots of little baby stuff so I made this a bit bigger, envisioning using it while out laying by the pond this summer.

I stitched using thread the color of the block for the stippling and SID, and used black thread for the critters

It was fun to make, and now I'm a 'GREAT Aunt!'

Very unique - I really like it. Great for a little one to find the little critters. Did you hand stitch the little critters or FMQ them also?

Great pattern and I love the addition of the critters. a wonderful break from a regular baby quilt. I generally make baby quilts larger too. Many new mommies do not use quilts when the baby is really small unless it is for a playmat. This way it can be a quilt for the baby to lay on and later the baby can sleep under it. I like your version of this quilt much better then the original pattern. You added sashing right?

Daleen 09-07-2015 07:47 AM

Yes, another way to get away from matching seams!

Overnight, I must think of quilts wqhile sleeping, I realized it was not sashing. I just used the background fabric as the edge sections on the blocks. Even easier than sashing!

annette1952 09-08-2015 07:25 AM

Such an adorable quilt. Love all the little critters (except for the snake!!) It could be a night crawler though. lol I am deathly afraid of snakes! Great quilt for down by the pond.
