Baby's First Year Quilt

2 Attachment(s)
This is my first time ever attempting this kind of thing. It's for my daughter's best friend since high school. They thought they would not be able to get pregnant so adopted a wonderful boy. As seems to happen, a few years later, pregnancy did happen and they now have another wonderful son. For her long wait and double happy parenting, I was happy to make this quilt for them.

I had some problems with thread shredding and breaking and some skipped stitches and was worried my machine was messed up, but it seems to have just been the result of sewing thru some pretty thick layers, because when I went to straight stitching it was fine.

I am going to sash with kid print flannel with cornerstones made from a favorite receiving blanket she also gave me to use. The background of one block is also the receiving blanket. The navy blue backgrounds are from the Mommy Wrap she used all the time. It was pretty threadworn, but I found enough to make a few blocks. It was knit so I backed it with some iron on to make it stronger.

One outfit was too heavy for the quilt, a Santa suit, so I made a pillow with that one. Here are the blocks I made and the two that are, and will be, pillows.

Cute idea ! Would love to know how you are going to put the quilt together, quilting, backing, attaching blocks? Are you going to stipple quilt the quilt?

Thank you for the sweet words all. I am going to use various juvenile flannel prints for sashing. A different one between each block and another for around the outside border. I will be using the flannel from the receiving blanket for cornerstones as there isn't enough left for anything more and I hope it will tie the flannel prints together by having all the same cornerstones. I think I will make 3" sashings. If I don't have enough different flannel prints, then I will duplicate some. This is going to be a throw, and I will back it with fleece, no batting. For quilting, I will echo the outfits and then do straight lines thru the sashing and binding.
I will be sure to post the quilt when it is finished!!

The first year quilt is not my original idea, I saw it on Pinterest. My Google search revealed several ways to make them. Mine is a composite of a couple I saw, plus my own ideas for the sashing and border. I chose the lighthouse theme border because the decorative theme of his baby nursery was Ocean.

I sure do like this. I don't think I've seen one like this where a whole outfit is in a block (not that I've browsed Pinterest for the topic). Usually I see a shirt, or a dress, but I like this outfit and the variety of special occasion ones. I also like the bib.

Please pass my congratulations to the parents. I'm so happy that God doubled their blessings after all the pain of infertility.

I didn't realize the outfits are special, but I'm delighted. When she gave me so many outfits and clothes, I really had to edit my choices.

I was asked for more detail of the quilt, but couldn't figure out how to attach a photo to the PM. So I am going to post it here. This is the top finished with sashing and border.
