this quilt is felted wool applique on a black double-sided cotton flannel. I spent 2 years appliquing the blocks during breaks working a night shift.
hooked me on working with wool...i love the process!

Your quilt is beautiful! Is it quilted? How, hand or machine? Did you use buttonhole applique? You must be thrilled with this quilt. Thanks for sharing it with us.

That is one beautiful quilt. The color combination is striking. I am amazed at your applique skill.

ckcowl 05-15-2009 03:17 AM

it is machine quilted, and machine pieced, only the wool applique is hand work, i button-hole stitched (most) of the pieces, stem stitched where i thought i needed to. this was my first adventure into wool hand work outside of rug hooking...I LOVE WORKING WITH WOOL! :D
i do not use fusable on my wool, tried it once, did not like the result. I use freezer paper to cut out my shapes, then as each piece is placed to be stitched i use a small straight pin or just hold it. the first block took awhile but after that block it really went pretty fast when i worked on it, i could get a lot done in a 15 minute sitting. I used the same black flannel on the back and a black cotton batt, black thread.
i am entering it in the quilt show this year (our local guild hosts one every other year and this is the year) i put it in the fair last summer (finished it just in time) and it won a blue ribbon plus the viewer's choice award, i was really surprised!

Absolutely beautiful. For sure a family heirloom!

Marcia 05-20-2009 02:23 PM

Your quilt IS breathtaking!!! I have worked with wool too and love it. But I have NEVER even thought to undertake a task as big as this!! Do you applique onto individual blocks and then sew them together? Is this an original pattern? Would you consider showing us some close up pics?

I can certainly see why you won an award--- and it would have been THIS viewer's choice, that is for sure!!

CindyBee 05-20-2009 02:29 PM

Amazing quilt! I would love to see a close up also.

Evelynquilts 05-20-2009 03:02 PM
