Bag - second try

2 Attachment(s)
I wanted to make my mother a purse/bag for her July birthday. She'll be 82 and has enough quilts, runners, placemats, etc - I wanted something different. I posted my 1st attempt a few weeks ago - it ended up being closer to an overnight bag than a purse for her tiny frame. So this is another try. I think I'll put a decorative button on the flap. It was supposed to have a cord and button closure, but I was concerned that it would be hard to open. this has a magnet instead.

I'm thinking of putting those two buttons on the bigger bag, but from here it looks like eyeballs! Here's where I first posted about that bag: http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...e-t191243.html

The pattern is "The Two Hour Tulip Purse". I'm thinking the "two hour" was a joke!

It has 2 small interior pockets and one under the flap. The idea of making the second bag part of a "set" came from this board. Thanks!

I match my purse to the current decade - use them until they are just disgusting. My mother matches hers to her outfits - with them all stored on shelves in her closet - with little stand-up thingys so they stand neatly at attention. (Do you think I was adopted?) So figured this would go with jeans if nothing else.

Your bags are very pretty. I haver been interested in the tulip purse pattern for a while now, and after seeing yours, I may just have to order it and make one!

What a great set, she can use the smaller one every day and carry the large one as a shopping bag when out and about picking up a few things - they are wonderful!

I had planned to get a pretty button from the quilt shop to finish the small bag, but the ones they had were too large. This one came from Walmart - I liked it so well I got enough to finish the big bag, too. And ... you were right ... when not on the white backing they don't look quite as much like eyeballs! (I only have one button on the big bag yet, but will put another - it has pockets front and back.)

I did put a piece of foam board in the bottom of each bag. I really think the smaller bag would really droop if you didn't do that. I made a little sleeve to put the foam board in - and left one end open - tucking it under the board. It could be taken out and washed if necessary.

Very pretty bags, like the button idea and the change to a snap closure... I never met a true 2 hour project lol :-)

lfstamper 06-27-2012 03:09 PM

I love them both! Great job!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love the colors too!

pattypurple 06-27-2012 04:57 PM

Great bags and color choices. The buttons make them "finished". I was given one of the tulip bags already cut out. I agree that the 2 Hr. must have been a joke.

debcavan 06-27-2012 05:09 PM

What a gorgeous fabric combination. They look so professional.

Quilt Novice 06-27-2012 05:43 PM

Very nice!

mamajack3 06-27-2012 06:13 PM

I love them. My 2 hour projects always seem to turn into 2 month projects!

nls 06-27-2012 06:14 PM

Pretty bags and colors!!

Cindy60545 06-28-2012 03:15 AM

too cute, both of them!

Wanabee Quiltin 06-28-2012 03:24 AM

I love your 'bags'. I personally love making purses and totes, the fancier the better. Your comment about the two hour bag is funny, I feel the same way. Sometimes it takes me two hours just to cut the darn thing out and get the right color thread !

glorcour 06-28-2012 03:43 AM

Both bags are lovely and it looks like a lot of work. Well done and great fabric choices

southernmema 06-28-2012 03:48 AM

Both bags are absolutely wonderful!

luci4 06-28-2012 05:08 AM

Colors are great. I really like the bags.

ItsJustMe 06-28-2012 05:30 AM

Wow! Love the colors and fabrics. Really nice bags!

Pink Dogwood 06-28-2012 05:34 AM

Great bags and wonderful colors and good idea for the magnetic close. She will love them. I love bag making and have accumulated a nice supply. Each new one is a challenge the first time and I do as you do make my own changes, such as the magnetic closure or zipper. Thanks for sharing!!!

Lyncat 06-28-2012 06:46 AM

I think the buttons will be ok on the bigger bag. They won't look like eyes once you remove the white packaging.
