I just finished the last seam on this and wanted to show you all how it came out. I asked for advice from the board on color selection. Some of it I took and some of it I didn't. The board didn't care for the gold I was thinking about using, so I left it out. The board also said the white was too much. I ignored you and can now see that you were right. The white is too bright.

I had no pattern. I just watched Billie Lauder's video and jumped right in. (One of my many bad habits.) This was fast and easy. I'm ready to do it again. Maybe with a pattern even!

Next thought.. The white is certainly too bright for this quilt. I agree with that, but I'm wondering how it would look if nothing really blended. Bright primary colors all in a bargello. What do you think?

Wow! I'm very impressed you did that without a pattern - it's beautiful! Definitely do more, as I'd say you are quite talented at Bargello's! I love it. And the white is fine.

Jim's Gem 02-12-2010 11:04 AM

Looks great. The white is a little much but......
I have never done a bargello quilt. I imagine it would look pretty with bright primary colors. (I like those colors anyway)

Great quilt!!

mytwopals 02-12-2010 12:09 PM

Very pretty.

cuppi duke 02-12-2010 12:11 PM

I think it's great as is. You are like me, I dance to my own tune when it comes to patterns.

dglvr 02-12-2010 01:16 PM

That is really nice. Like the fabrics. You did awesome

rootyr 02-12-2010 01:19 PM

Wow.nice!

KBunn 02-12-2010 01:21 PM

It's really nice. You should try a scrappy one ....I did one a few years ago and it came out neat ans was a great way to reduce my stash.

MNQuilter 02-12-2010 01:33 PM

I disagree about the white. Actually I agree and disagree! It hink it fits fine toward the top where you have the lighter colors, it just doesn't transition as well at the bottom between the two dark colors. So you learned a lesson and next time you'll do it different! It's still a beautiful quilt and whoever uses it will love it!

omak 02-12-2010 01:49 PM

A nice dip in the tea will calm that stark white, eh? <wave>

Sheila Elaine 02-12-2010 02:05 PM

Very nice Lisa. I agree if you put it in the washer that has about a glass of tea mixed in with the water first, it will absorb the tea & look more subtle. Your fabrics look like cottons of better quality, so I don't think you'd get streaking if you make sure to let the washer run about 30 seconds, turn it off, then put in the top. Don't let it stay in long & turn washer back on, then do rinse cycle twice. Good luck.

Chele 02-12-2010 02:23 PM

I love it! The white is neat and a fun contrast. Aren't bargellos fun? You did a beautiful job with choosing colors and piecing!

barnbum 02-12-2010 02:37 PM

I think it looks like a shimmery puddle. It's cool!! Bargellos take on a theme of their own and yours is unique--there's a story there. I like how the bottom is defined--then it blends more... like the gray areas of our thoughts. Like someone in a Physics class starting to day dream. That's it!! It's name is Daydreamer:-D

beachlady 02-12-2010 03:01 PM

I like your bargello. The white is a stark white, but looks like a dividing line to me.

jewelps 02-12-2010 05:25 PM

love the colors

BKinCO 02-12-2010 06:29 PM

Wow ! You got that done FAST!!! I think it looks great! I can't wait to try one!! Hopefully it turns out half as good as yours!

nanakatmck 02-12-2010 07:18 PM

The white was a little more contrast than I would have preferred between the dark pink and dark purple, but it worked well between the light pink and small print.

BUT....... this is YOUR quilt done your way and it is BEAUTIFUL!! Job well done!

littlehud 02-12-2010 10:38 PM

Your quilt is beautiful. I love bargellos. I bought a kit at a quilt show I went to and it is bright colors and has some white in it. I say go for it for your next bargello.

Eddie 02-12-2010 10:40 PM

Beautiful, I like it!

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 02-13-2010 06:50 AM

Thanks for all the nice comments. A bit of tea to calm the white down is not a bad plan.

The quilt was so fast and easy and fun that I'm setting here trying to talk myself out of going shopping for more fabric!

Oklahoma Suzie 02-13-2010 06:58 AM

nice quilt

Tippy 02-13-2010 07:24 AM

Rit makes a "tea dye" that is wonderful, giving the tea dye effect, but without the tannin that can break down the fabric over time... just a thought.

vbourck 02-13-2010 10:59 AM

Here is a link to a bargello done in brights- pretty cool!

This is REALLY good to know!
I learned about "antiquing" things when I was doing ceramics ... it was really interesting how the colors were more rich after washing them down with a dark and then wiping off ... of course with fabric/quilts, you are just doing a light dye, but the colors really do look more rich with that process. <wave>

Wow! I'm sold! As soon as I get a couple of other projects finished, I'm going to do a crayon color bargello. That looks cool.

Quilt4u 02-13-2010 01:42 PM

Wow!!!! Very nice. Great job.

jljack 02-13-2010 06:52 PM

I agree the white is a little stark, but overall it's great. My DH just did his own bargello pattern for a set of seat covers (sort of) for our classic car. I'll take pictures tomorrow so you can see...it took him FOREVER to do all the sewing of the strips, but once done, I think they came out well.

butterflywing 02-13-2010 07:13 PM

i like the white. i think it makes it crisp.

remember that a tea bath will mute everything, even the already muted colors and your clear pinks. you won't have the definition that you have now. you have to decide which is more important.

JJean 02-13-2010 07:30 PM

What a lovely quilt! :-D :-D :-D You've inspired me to put a Bargello on my to do list.

sewsue 02-13-2010 08:11 PM

Its just great and the colors look fine to me, I have not made one yet but hopefully someday soon.

butterflywing 02-13-2010 08:58 PM

there re two ways to dot it. in a circle or flat. what are you interested in?

Gramof6 02-13-2010 10:06 PM

I love your Bargello. I think it looks very crisp & Spring like. Love the colors. Thank You for sharing.

The video was on QuiltersTV called something like Bargello with Billie Lauder. Their videos change often, so it may or may not be there. Some that are taken off are put back later, so keep checking.
