Boy I struggled with this one! Not because the design was difficult (well, it wasn't easy), but because I decided to change the design ... AFTER it was done.

The original pattern (by Ruth Blanchett by virtue of QuiltUniversity.com) had a "wave" repeat at the bottom all the way across, and was cut blunt across the bottom (see original pattern in blue - pic 'stolen' from the QuiltUniversity.com web site!). Even when I was making it, the bottom of the pattern "bothered" me. Because we were working with pre-made strips, the bottom "wave" wasn't blunt at the bottom while we were working it, it continued off the bottom as a curve. We were meant to cut it off. But I liked it.

So I folded the bottom under and laid it on top of this and that border fabric to audition. I played with it for days, folding this part away then that part, auditioning it with different border colors, etc. Then I just left it on my table to 'stew' a while while I figured out what was in my brain trying to get out.

Finally, I saw what I wanted to see, so I ripped and ripped and ripped. Then I added new strips in a single color to continue that bottom curve into a "border" of sorts. As a result if you look closely the bottom strips are wanky but they're all the same fabric so from a distance ... well who cares.

I *might* make it again but this time do the bottom right the first time :)

My husband said it looks like an eye with one raised eye-brow.

I call it "Vision".

Holy cow! That's stunning.

MDMPanther 01-25-2011 05:26 PM

I really like what you did to it too!!! The bottom looks nice...like it's levitating in the air, sorta....and not cut off.

bamamama 01-25-2011 05:26 PM

I really like the changes you made to it. I'd love to make one for my son....but did it make you dizzy doing it?

tealfalcon 01-25-2011 05:28 PM

Oh that's so pretty....very nice

MamaBear61 01-25-2011 05:29 PM

Beautiful.

Mitch's mom 01-25-2011 05:32 PM

Everything you did to the original quilt pattern improved it. I like the light colors on the top of the swirls in yours compared to the dark and the bottom finishing is a BIG improvement. Good quilting, well done!

cinnya 01-25-2011 05:35 PM

WOW,WOW,WOW just gorgeous.

cwessel47 01-25-2011 05:36 PM

Very nice! No wonkiness from my point of view. Isn't it great to "break the rules" and go your own way? Fabulous results happen when you do your own thing.

I like your vision. Sometimes I work the way you did and change my mind after the top is put together. Glad things worked out for you. Now you'll have it all worked out for the next time you make this pattern. BTW, I love your choice of colors.

Cherylsea 01-25-2011 06:17 PM

I really like it! I never would have used those colors but they make a beautiful quilt.

Beautiful! Love your changes.

Airwick156 01-25-2011 08:21 PM

Okay I am sure this is a stupid question, but I'm going to ask anyways.
How do you get the design in the quilt? And is it hard to do? Because one day I am going to make a bargello in purples and whites or so thats my colors for today...lol
And how many different colors did you use?

Airwick156 01-25-2011 08:22 PM

I like your quilt better then the blue one. I think it looks better without the piano keys. And your colors are really cool.

DogHouseMom 01-25-2011 08:23 PM

Thanks everyone! As for the colors, purely by chance. Since I was taking a class to learn how to make a tricky bargello I wasn't looking to make something I would love - so I just grabbed stash and went with it.

Hee hee ... nobody noticed that I ran out of the black fabric on the bottom and had to find something that matched close enough.

Thanks for all the support.

Mariposa 01-25-2011 08:26 PM

Pretty!!

purple_butterfly 01-25-2011 08:31 PM

Definitely prefer yours, It's beautiful and the 3D effect is stronger with the bottom curve. Like your colours better too, the original is too blue for me. :-D

quiltedlamb07 01-25-2011 08:34 PM

thebossbab 01-25-2011 08:42 PM

WOW! I like your version better. Makes it POP from the fabric. I may have to find this pattern. DH says it looks hard but it looks easy to me.

wanderingcreek 01-25-2011 09:07 PM

Gorgeous quilt and your changes make it look better than the original. I love the colors you used.
