Your opinions please? Do I add border(s) or leave as is?

My thought is to add a 4" inner border of the fabric shown on my cutting table. Then, use up the leftover strips to make a 2" wide, pieced outer border. Borders will make the quilt a bit bigger. It's 44" x 66" now. What do you think?

Thank you! I've been hemming and hawing over this too long. I need my wall back! LOL!

Leftover tubes of strip sets.

Possible border fabric. I used this fabric in the quilt, but it's hard to see it!

chele, what a georgeous wonderful quilt. you did a fantastic job.
i am certainly no expert, but my first reaction is to say don't put any border on at all. the eye is drawn to the center naturally and a border might interrupt the flow.
just my opinion and it is worth exactly what you paid for it

SaraSewing 03-18-2008 07:31 AM

I'd suggest a border as a "frame". It would set off the pattern. I also like your idea of using the scraps for a little pieced edge. The quilt is beautiful. You are the master of bright beautiful colors. I love 'em. Sara

Farmer Girl 03-18-2008 07:31 AM

Chele, That is just gorgeous. I like your idea of the 4" border, will frame a quite beautiful picture, but not sure about an outer border, may detract from the wonderful design.

thimblebug6000 03-18-2008 07:41 AM

I might put a 1" finished deep colour (reads black) as a 1st border & then that lovely border print as the final one. I think I'd save all those neat batik chunks for another scrappy project or something you could use them on as a piano key border.

Bev 03-18-2008 07:43 AM

8) I agree with the one border reply. Two would be too much. It's an amazing quilt!!!

HMK 03-18-2008 07:53 AM

I agree with Thimble's idea - thin dark border and then the lovely print outer border. Save the rest for a scrappy quilt. The eye really is drawn to the centre, isn't it?

patricej 03-18-2008 08:43 AM

I vote for a 1-inch black border, then a one-inch printed border, then a 1.5" or 2" black border.

or just a 2" black border.

lisae 03-18-2008 08:49 AM

What a wonderful quilt!

I like your border idea.

sewmuch 03-18-2008 08:57 AM

Chele, thats gorgeous, you did a great job. Love batiks, 1 border of what you show is my vote   Nancy

zyxquilts 03-18-2008 09:34 AM

Wow Chele! That is too cool!
I vote for a small (1" - 1.5") dark inner border, then the wider border of the fabric on your cutting board. I think the dark one will help 'contain' the bargello & show it off. Then use the scraps in a new quilt!
:D :D :D

Steve 03-18-2008 09:44 AM

Yeah, personally I say stop the eyes. Without a small border (the dark sounds best) the pattern and bargello won't halt and thus leave the viewer wandering mentally.

Steve 03-18-2008 09:45 AM

Oh, I forgot to say WOW!

Shadow Dancer 03-18-2008 11:40 AM

Chele it's BEAUTIFUL!!!! You did it! :) :) I am so proud of you!! :) :) :)

On the topic of borders, it's a bargello, you don't want a border that is going to take away from the bargello design....if you want to add a border, make it a solid color so it's not competing with the center fabrics in the design.... if it was me, I would put a 4 inch solid black border on it, with black binding.

ccbear66 03-18-2008 11:56 AM

WOW :!: :!: :!: :!: :!:
I love your quilt. I think that I agree with shadow on the black border. Save thoses other scrappy borders for a different project.

tlrnhi 03-18-2008 01:53 PM

I'm really of no help here.
I just LOVE it! Border or no border!
GORGEOUS!!
If you need a home for it, I'll send you my address!

I have the same problem with the chat room. It'll let me in, but when I go to type, it says I'm not connected. I've tried everything to remedy the problem, but still no luck. UGH!

annmarie 03-18-2008 03:03 PM

I'm with Shadow. A 4" black border would be the "frame" for your FANTASTIC, STUPENDOUS, AWESOME quilt.

Pam Pollock 03-18-2008 03:43 PM

Chele, It is a beautiful quilt!!! You can be proud!!! You might try printing a copy of your photo & then cut the photo out & place some scraps behind it to simulate a border in the way you were thinking of doing it & then try some black & see what that does for it. Stand back from it & look at it for awhile & then decide. It would be nice to get a little preview of what both would look like before choosing don't you think? I like everyone's ideas but I would like to actually see them before choosing. :D

jbsstrawberry 03-18-2008 04:03 PM

Ohhh my gosh CHELE!!! That is amazing! You did yourself proud kiddo!!! I think you should MAKE MORE :D

lozza 03-18-2008 04:20 PM

That is truly incredible!! I agree, a small border would finish it off nicely. Fantastic work! You done well.

Minda 03-18-2008 04:27 PM

Beautilful quilt! I love your fabrics, good job Chele :D

Celeste 03-19-2008 01:08 AM

BDor 03-19-2008 08:30 AM

Heres my 2 cents worth and that's all it is worth. The figured border will detract from the center and pull your eye away from the beauty of the bargello. Frame it in black and let the bargello have center stage.

Beverly

Yvonne 03-19-2008 03:47 PM

Am I too late to say, "WOW!" You have one beautiful quilt on your hands. I think you need to put a frame around it to say, "It's done!" and not look unfinished. And, as others have said before me, my opinion is worth absolutely, exactly how much you paid for it! Meanwhile, it's a beauty!

Chele 03-19-2008 04:23 PM

You guys are the best! I knew you would come through for me! I thank you from the bottom of my confused heart! I think I'll add a simple black frame and call it a day. Thanks for everyone's comments and suggestions. This board is wonderful to beginners. Especially the color challenged like myself!

My next quilt is pastels! LOL!

jacquemoe 03-19-2008 05:41 PM

Wow, Chele. That's awesome.

Kyiav10 03-19-2008 06:39 PM

WOW! Such a magnificant quilt.

Kyia

Jeannie 03-20-2008 08:14 AM

Your quilt is wonderful!!! Just wonderful!! I am a scrappy quilter so I favor the border fabric for contrast or I do agree with using a black border....just not toooo black..find a batik that might throw a little color in now and then. Let us see you final result..

ania755 03-20-2008 08:37 AM

Chele ..its gorgeous....What a talent !!! I love it... (Three tumbs up...I don't know how to make them..lol)

vicki reno 03-20-2008 11:25 AM

I vote for a black border. Its stunning :!:

sandpat 03-20-2008 12:44 PM

Wow Chele, what an incredible quilt! I can't wait to see it with the black (or dark) border. That one is really a keeper!! (or if you don't want it...I'll send my addie so I can keep it for you  )

ruthie 03-20-2008 03:34 PM

I'm with Shadow, large black border to frame the beautiful fabrics and design.

raksmum 03-25-2008 05:18 PM

That is just beautiful and I think your choice of black or a sold of one of the colors in the bargello would look great.
What pattern is that? I would love to make it.

Cordelia 03-25-2008 06:16 PM

That reminds me of a tie-dye t-shirt! Really cool. I'd put a black inner border on that one and pick one of the colors for an outer border.

Bernadette Harwood 03-25-2008 06:22 PM

I say make the double border with a narrow black or dark and the wider 4". Leave the scraps off unless you need it for size as I also think it will take away from the beautiful center. Great work and wonderful colors.

Blue Bell 03-25-2008 06:54 PM

WOW! Your quilt is fantastic.
