Batik Tumelo Trail

1 Attachment(s)
Pattern Name: Bonnie Hunter's Tumelo Trail (variation of Jacob's Ladder)
Dimensions: 72" X 72"
Fabric source/name: Batik Scraps
Pieced and quilting by machine, Warm and Plush batting.

I made this in a Bonnie Hunter class. If you ever have an opportunity to have a workshop with her, take it!! Originally, I planned a larger quilt, but liked the square arrangement & size that wound up on my design wall. I finished the center of the quilt within days of the workshop then wanted to use the left over HSTs in the border. I must have tried & took apart 4 or 5 of them. Couldn't get the math to work out. Piano keys are not my favorite, but I really like them in this case. I'm always disappointed in how my batik quilts photograph. The fabrics have such gorgeous prints, but look almost solid.

Great scrap quilt. I am intrigued by the quilting on the border (what I can see of it) Can you post a close up of the quilting in the border?

The quilt is at the cottage, but I'm not. I'll get a detailed photo soon.

I would also like to see a close up of the outer quilting. Your quilt is such a lovely looking quilt.

soozieQ 04-11-2017 03:56 AM

Lovely I know what you mean when you say Batiks don't always photograph well. All quilts look so much better in person. I can tell that this one is super even though you might be disappointed with photo

The piano keys was a good choice for the edges, it adds a nice contrast to your curved quilting and picks up on the straight lines of the piecing! nice quilt!

Beautiful quilt...I love BH and, trust me, if she were ever teaching in my area, I would jump into a class with her in a heartbeat. Thanks for sharing your beautifully finished quilt.

Beautiful! Did BH say what the name is from? Tumelo?

PaperPrincess,
Your quilt is beautiful!! Piano key borders are very forgiving and often easier than some other pieced borders.

Thank you for all your compliments! A couple of you asked to see the quilting detail, so here it is.

I quilt with a Handi Quilter Avante and had just purchased the echo feet. These add additional spacing (an echo) when used with a template or along a seam. I wanted to do a scallop on the piano key, so thought it would be a good place to try. I used a swag template with my regular foot, across the whole length of the border. I changed the foot then did another pass. I need some practice because unless you position the template exactly as you did the first time, you get some variation in the echo. I freehanded the filler feather so some have 3 plumes on one side & 4 on the other. As they say, this adds interest :-). Then I SITD the piano keys from the outside edge until I hit the scallop.

Love that border! And it really compliments the circular designs formed by the quilting in the main body of the quilt.

Thanks so much for posting the closeup. Getting an echo with templates is indeed hard, even with a foot that works! But the effect is so worth it. And while we stress over those areas where the echo isn't the same or the freehand fill is just a little bit different, most of the time once the quilt is off the rack I have trouble finding those spots.

I take pride in my hand guided work and try to embrace the imperfections and variations that a computer guided set up won't do. You should too, the result is lovely!
