Batik WIP and you can never know when you'll find a bargin...

I bought my first jelly rolls from Connecting Threads. They had 24 2 1/2 inch strips in each roll and I bought two plus 3 charm packs, each with 24 5 inch sqs. To make the quilt below I used both rolls and had enough scraps left over for a small quilt. I cut the 5 inch sqs into 2 1/2 inch sqs. The first border will be black, then a pieced border of 2 1/2 inch sqs and then another black border. I have never used batiks before and this one is bright - very bright as my hubby keeps saying. I begin with graph paper. Each square on the graph paper represents a 2 1/2 inch sq. Makes it very easy to determine how many sqs. and strips that I need. I still have to lay the blocks out in a pleasing fashion; I just put them on my design board as I made them. I will post the finished top when done - about a week I guess. I am having so much fun doing this quilt top.

We have a bookstore here that takes books in trade for cash or store credit. They have books, new and used, music, magazine, toys, crafts, etc. and a cafe to sip coffee and leisurely read to your hearts content. Anyway, I found 12 blocks of a sampler quilt for $1.00 each (all the fabrics needed for each block are in the plastic envelope,) and 1 1/2 yds. of CHRISTmas fabric for $1.00. I had to pay nothing because I had store credit from the books I brought in. The blocks are from Hancock and are in blue/yellow/green. I will have to add the borders, but fortunately my LQS has the fabric. Don't you just love a bargin?

Your quilt is going to be beautiful!! I have 9 of those 12 same quilt blocks in the plastic envelopes. Mine have 50% off tags on each and I guess the 3 blocks were sold out. I'll do something with them someday.

What is the name of the book store and what city? I'm in Phoenix but spent time in Flagstaff too. Just hoping it might be in one of those. I like your blocks, looks like you are having lots of fun.

chuckbere15 09-07-2012 09:31 PM

Fabulous idea!!! It's going to be gorgeous :)

oma66 09-08-2012 06:17 AM

The design for the quilt may not be my own, but I think I have seen it or something like it when looking at quilts on the internet... I see so many quilts on the internet that I like and keep in mind for future reference and sometimes use as a stepping off point for my own tweek on a design...I put it on graph paper to get the size I want and to know how much fabric I need and pieces I need to cut...otherwise I would be lost. This board is chock full of inspiration and it is one of the reasons I enjoy it so much. All of you ladies and gents are so, so talented and I am so often in awe of your work.

Helen S 09-08-2012 07:11 AM

Wow, great deal! The Christmas fabric is adorable, and I LOVE what you're doing with the quilt! Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Nikki and Co. 09-08-2012 10:00 AM

Yes, I love a bargain and yours is going to be gorgeous, anxious to see it finished!

Tartan 09-08-2012 10:34 AM

Your batik quilt looks almost like one in the Modern quilt book I am currently reading. The design has 3 squares in the center instead of 4 and 1 inch strips between the rows. It was by Kim Schaefer called City Lights and the wallhanging was in batiks also. Nothing like a good bargain to get the creative juices flowing!

Nine of the blocks would make an awesome throw or baby quilt.

I love this quilt!!!! I may have to make one like it. And yes, I do love a bargain, but I never find any like yours. Where In Arizona are you? My FIL lives in Green Valley, and they have a shop called the White Elephant. Your shop sounds just like it.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who enjoys designing quilts on graph paper. No EQ for me, my brain needs the workout!

Blinkokr 09-09-2012 04:37 AM

Just lovely, beautiful job and thank you for sharing
Have a Blessed day

Very nice! I really like the design. And you got a really bargain! Great!!

DebbE 09-09-2012 05:30 AM

Love the blocks! Connecting Threads is wonderful, isn't it? Where else can you buy precuts that are exactly the same price per yard as regular fabrics - no cutting charges. I love their fabrics, too. The CHRISTmas fabric is really cute. Can't wait to see the finished products!

ItsJustMe 09-09-2012 05:39 AM

Really pretty! Love the design and the colors!

bibi 09-09-2012 05:47 AM

Terrific job!

JuneBillie 09-09-2012 06:04 AM

Beautiful colors, and you inspired me to begin a quilt I want to start for our Master Bedroom.

Pieces2 09-09-2012 10:11 AM

A great colorful quilt. Love the fabric. I thought I was the only one that used graph paper for my quilt designs. LOL

JanieH 09-09-2012 02:08 PM

Your batik quilt is bright, very bright, and I love it! It just seems to glow. And love your bargains also!

cannyquilter 09-09-2012 02:44 PM

I have just purchased those jelly rolls from Connecting Threads, will steal your idea if that is ok, had planned to do a modified jelly roll race quilt but really like what you have done with the strips, obviously more work but well worth it.

QUILTNMO 09-09-2012 02:50 PM

calicojoan 09-09-2012 04:34 PM

Ohh la-la!! Do I love your bright and scrappy quilt. It amazes me seeing it go from concept to reality! What a stunner! And what a bargain on your quilt block find!! Love those special buys!!

jeanneb52 09-09-2012 11:30 PM
