Thanks for all the compliments! I think I will make one for myself. Either this pattern or maybe a triple Irish Chain. I haven't made on of those yet and think it would be pretty in blues and whites.

Your quilt is beautiful and you did a great job with the different blues you selected.
As an asside, I charge a lot more that $4 per hour, plus the fabric is always extra. and then to top it off I charge for the machine quiltiing, even if I do it myself. The last quilt I did was queen sized with two matching pillow shams. I charged $835. Perhaps the next time you'll charge more. Remember quilting is a pleasurable past time and we like to give our quilts to those not only that we love but to those who appreciate them and what it takes to make one. Love the quilt, the bummer about making quilts to sell is that we never get paid the price we should get. I have beautiful quilts and they offer you $300 for a queen size.

Yes, I will charge much more if I do a customer one again and if they don't want to pay that much, then I'll just keep happily quilting for my family and charity. Thanks for your pricing info.

Blues are my favorite so of course I love it! I don't think a lot of folks that don't quilt realize the time and cost of making one.

Simply beautiful.....I love the simplicity of using one color, although it really isn't simple to pick out colors in one colorway that all work together so well.....your choices were perfect in this quilt. Lovely quilt :)

It is really beautiful I can see why you wouldn't want 'to give it away'. I totally agree with you quilting for money is a chore. I have a co-worker who has hinted he would like me to make him a quilt. The last time we were in a group he started asking about it, I said I don't think you realize how expensive that quilt would be, and then explained how many hours I put into the current quilt I am making and it's not even finished or quilted yet.
If you ever do it again be up front with the person tell them you'll charge a minimum of $10 an hour and that an easy pattern can easily take 60 hours to make, and I think I would require that they purchase the fabric, and supplies as well that shouldn't come out of your time. |

Having been a wholesaler and retailer of my 'wares' in the past.....the only way I was able to make money was to 'assembly line' the process. A lot of people will tell you that their mother/grandmother/sister/aunt/etc. have or are quilters and makes to give away. Seldom do these recipeints realize the dollar cost of these gifts, but I do think they all realize the "Labor of Love". |
