Beautiful quilt! Love the colors

She *should* be thrilled, the quilt is quite lovely. :D

But I agree with you, as a skilled artisan, doesn't it just irritate that you can't make more than $10 an hour for your work!

it is beautiful, people just don't realize how much work there is doing it.

debcavan 09-19-2011 08:52 AM

Blues are so wonderful. Your quilt is gorgeous

KathyKat 09-19-2011 08:56 AM

Thanks for all the compliments! I think I will make one for myself. Either this pattern or maybe a triple Irish Chain. I haven't made on of those yet and think it would be pretty in blues and whites.

QUILTNMO 09-19-2011 09:21 AM

love the colors very pretty

tlrnhi 09-19-2011 10:28 AM

OMG! It's gorgeous!

AuntJudy14 09-19-2011 10:40 AM

Your quilt is beautiful and you did a great job with the different blues you selected.

As an asside, I charge a lot more that $4 per hour, plus the fabric is always extra. and then to top it off I charge for the machine quiltiing, even if I do it myself. The last quilt I did was queen sized with two matching pillow shams. I charged $835.
Perhaps the next time you'll charge more.

Remember quilting is a pleasurable past time and we like to give our quilts to those not only that we love but to those who appreciate them and what it takes to make one.

Should you be asked again I hope you will charge more.

I have oh so wanted to do a "BLUE" quilt. Just haven't yet.
Thanks for the inspiration! This is just lovely!

grannyp70 09-19-2011 12:19 PM

Lucky Lady 09-19-2011 12:28 PM

Absolutely beautiful. My favorite color!!

suezquilts 09-19-2011 12:30 PM

Love the quilt, the bummer about making quilts to sell is that we never get paid the price we should get. I have beautiful quilts and they offer you $300 for a queen size.

I need a tutorial!

KathyKat 09-19-2011 12:53 PM

Yes, I will charge much more if I do a customer one again and if they don't want to pay that much, then I'll just keep happily quilting for my family and charity. Thanks for your pricing info.

My favourite colour, you have done a fantastic job on this quilt......I would hate to have to part with it!

jackied 09-19-2011 02:36 PM

Blues are my favorite so of course I love it! I don't think a lot of folks that don't quilt realize the time and cost of making one.

Lovely and cozy. TATW is one of my favs'. You did good!
Making a quilt for money rarely makes money so we do it for the love of it.

I think it is an outstanding quilt, you did a fabulous job!!

cedarvalleyquilts 09-19-2011 05:25 PM

Simply beautiful.....I love the simplicity of using one color, although it really isn't simple to pick out colors in one colorway that all work together so well.....your choices were perfect in this quilt. Lovely quilt :)

What a beautiful quilt!!! I can see why she's pleased.

kristen0112 09-19-2011 08:04 PM

It is really beautiful I can see why you wouldn't want 'to give it away'. I totally agree with you quilting for money is a chore. I have a co-worker who has hinted he would like me to make him a quilt. The last time we were in a group he started asking about it, I said I don't think you realize how expensive that quilt would be, and then explained how many hours I put into the current quilt I am making and it's not even finished or quilted yet.
If you ever do it again be up front with the person tell them you'll charge a minimum of $10 an hour and that an easy pattern can easily take 60 hours to make, and I think I would require that they purchase the fabric, and supplies as well that shouldn't come out of your time.

toadmomma 09-20-2011 02:47 AM

I agree. My craft of choice in the past has been crafts and painting. Rocks, gourds, wood, fabric...you name it (Folk art/tole painters are versatile). Anyway, most of the items I have done, I give away. Reason being.....what most would consider to be a $7 to $12 item.....I KNOW the time it takes me and that time ($$) is usually between $45 and $75.

Having been a wholesaler and retailer of my 'wares' in the past.....the only way I was able to make money was to 'assembly line' the process.

A lot of people will tell you that their mother/grandmother/sister/aunt/etc. have or are quilters and makes to give away. Seldom do these recipeints realize the dollar cost of these gifts, but I do think they all realize the "Labor of Love".
