Bias Blunder
1 Attachment(s)
Just finished the binding on this one, the first quilt top I completed about 18 months ago. This will live in the trailer.
I was wondering....how many of you have made one of these.....and how many made it for their first quilt? It seems to be a favorite for beginners. My beginner mishap on this was that I didn’t know I was supposed to use a paper foundation to keep the bias in check. To try to rectify my mistake I cut long narrow strips of fusible interfacing and marked it at 12” intervals (the intended finished size of the blocks). Then I fused and basted the strips to the quilt edges easing to fit before I sewed the binding on. Then I washed it and hoped for the best. It turned out pretty much square and not lumpy so it was worth the extra effort. . |
I like it - there is something about that style that seems so comforting and usable.

Lovely quilt!

No one would ever know you had problems with the blocks. Beautiful quilt and colors!
it looks great
Your quilt is gorgeous!
String quilts are not my favorite but I do like this one. Good job!
Great scrappy quilt.:o
I think it is beautiful, so many beautiful colors. I love scrappy quilts.
Your quilt looks great! I love all those bright colors. Scrappy quilts are my favorite.
It’s great! Glad you figured it out!
Beautiful! Looks perfect to me! I love the great scrappiness of it! Wonderful job!
lovely quilt!
That lovely quilt doesn't look like you had any troubles whatsoever! Great work.
You should be very proud of this quilt. It is very pretty and there is 'life' in this quilt. I see many quilts that do not speak to 'life". This one does so it should keep you warm inside and out.
It's beautiful and a great way to use up scraps. I've made one similar.
Great scrappy!
I like it. I'm getting ready to dive into my leftover strips as well and am thinking along these lines. Yours turned out really pretty.
I think it turned out great! Keep up the good work!!
I love your quilt. Thanks for the tips!
Even with scrappy quilts there is skill or a natural ability to put colors together and you have it. Lovely job.
Nice! Thx. For tip. Will use it.
Love your quilt and colors are awesome. I've made several of these quilts, not as a beginner, but because I have so many strings in a tub that will never get used and they keep multiplying. I see no need to throw them away because I think they can turn into beautiful creations. I love scrappy and love string quilts.
That’s a great tip! I have a quilt ready to be bound that needs a little “taming” along the edges so it’s not ruffly. And your quilt is beautiful.
Beautiful quilt...mine will never turn out as pretty!
I like your quilt. It is one of my favorite blocks to make. My kids will choose a string quilt before any pieced quilt I make no matter how many hours I put in it. They all request rag quilts too. Easy for me! I keep a pile of paper by my sewing machine and sew a strip block when I get bored of what I'm sewing on. I use MSQC ten inch papers. They are much more useful then first glance. The lines are there to keep the strips straight no matter the widths starting in the center out. It is super easy to remove too. It's inexpensive. I've been using out of the same package for the last couple years.

I love string quilts. I use muslin or ugly fabric as my foundation. Great quilt!
Nice string quilt.
It looks beautiful! You have some wonderful fabrics in there. I recognize some that are in my stash.

I don't post very much or very often . . . but I love this most beautiful, colorful quilt! I pray it holds it's shape and does just fine . . . for it surely should be enjoyed!
A really good solution to your dilemma. I just want to say one thing about this quilt. I love it!
Ohhhhh I loveeeeee this, so happy and bright! Excellent work!
This is a seriously beautiful quilt.
It's gorgeous! I love it! You have some beautiful fabrics in there. May I ask what size your blocks are, and what width you used for your strips?
I did the same thing many, many years ago in every blue and yellow fabric imaginable. Mine to worked and I really like yours. Thanks for sharing as I had completely forgotten about that quilt that was a gift--didn't receive a thank you but it is what it is.
Have a good day. Karen |

Fantastic quilt! I couldn't stop looking at it! While paper piecing is a good way to work with the biases, you also have to remove all that paper which is a pain. I think using the wash away stabilizer is a good way to avoid having to remove the paper. I might try that idea.

So bright and lively, this quilt really is a fun one to look at.
This is lovely! Scrappy quilts are the best....cozy, colorful, and I'm making something out of strings!!
Just love it, great scraps. No matter how you did it, it was a great success!
