Big Block Quilt

3 Attachment(s)
This was kind of an experiment.... I wanted to do one big blown up quilt block as a lap quilt. It came out rather huge for a lap, nearly 60x60".

I've wanted to do this too! Have seen a book about Big Blocks, but it seemed pretty limiting. You've done a great job.

PaperPrincess 03-01-2017 06:07 AM

I really like big single block quilts! Yours is wonderful, and the quilting compliments the piecing.

Geri B 03-01-2017 06:18 AM

Experiment successful! Great way to use "why?" fabric and make it pop!

QuiltnNan 03-01-2017 06:24 AM

nicely done

QM 03-01-2017 07:32 AM

You made good choices of fabrics, block and quilting. Good work.
I have made a large number of big block quilts, but I usually either stretch the block, or add something to the top and bottom, If I don't want a square quilt. I gather you would have preferred something that was not square.

I like that idea, and your choices of fabric really accentuate the layered look of the block. Good job all around.

wraez 03-01-2017 10:32 AM

WOW this is huge, bet it worked up fast! Fast is fun and rewarding

redquilter 03-01-2017 12:21 PM

No I knew it would be square which is fine for a lap quilt. Just didn't mean to make it so big. Next time I do this I'll scale everything down a bit.

I didn't use a pattern. You can probably draw it out on graph paper just from my photo.

The train fabric is actually postcards of trains. It was donated to my charity group so no telling how many years back it goes. I looked for some selvedge info for you, and the only piece of selvedge I have says, "Shamash". That's probably the manufacturer. Maybe you can track some down.

LenaBeena 03-01-2017 03:07 PM

My railroad "nut" husband would like this :)

sewbizgirl 03-01-2017 03:17 PM

I loved the train fabric, myself! :o

Jane Quilter 03-01-2017 04:31 PM

turned out great

greaterexp 03-01-2017 05:02 PM

What a terrific idea! I've often thought of doing that, but I'm glad you showed your wonderful finished work to inspire me!

twinkie 03-02-2017 04:06 AM

Great idea

Homespun 03-02-2017 05:14 AM

WOW, that is a great quilt!!!

quilttiger 03-02-2017 05:34 AM

Wow, this is one amazing quilt!

I've used a couple of the BQ patterns, and they are just great for showcasing awesome prints. Sometimes I don't want to cut up a great print fabric into small pieces, and the big quilt patterns do hit the spot!

I was thinking the same thing, only it is our 4 yr. old grandson who knows every railroad signal and every train company by their colors and logos. Think he is destined to become a civil engineer. LOL

BrendaK 03-02-2017 05:36 AM

Kool. Love the way it's quilted. BrendaK

I have done something similar but making a huge star. It came about the same size as yours. It's a great fast quilt, yours is very pretty. Good job.

KathyJ 03-02-2017 06:50 AM

Outstanding job & great fabric selection. Would be wonderful for a charity quilt, which is about all I do. How did you enlarge the pattern or was it from a book. If so, would you share which one?? Thanks for your help. Kathy

momsbusy 03-02-2017 07:07 AM

Your quilt turned out great! I have been thinking about making one block baby quilts.

appleblossom 03-02-2017 09:07 AM

See my response in post #15... with some graph paper you can make it any size you want.

sewbizgirl 03-02-2017 09:39 AM

Thank you all for your positive comments! I appreciate them. :o

JanieH 03-02-2017 10:15 AM

Great job - love your colors.

carolynjo 03-02-2017 11:02 AM

What fun you must have had while working up this quilt.

annette1952 03-02-2017 12:01 PM

I love it! The fabrics are awesome. Great job!

sJens 03-02-2017 02:23 PM

Really nice--have never thought of doing something like this.

Tweety2911 03-02-2017 02:25 PM

I give you an A+ on this very pretty quilt and quilting!

JoyjoyMarie 03-03-2017 06:21 AM

This looks great - I like the idea of your project, the manageability of the size, and the colors and pattern you chose. Applause, applause!

Clmay 03-03-2017 07:35 AM

Thank you for this inspiration. I never thought of blowing up a certain block to make a quilt or lap top. Your blown up block is very pretty.

Dina 03-03-2017 09:55 AM

I love this. It is just beautiful. And clever. When I first started quilting 7 years ago, I wanted to make big one block quilts. My quilt guild friends didn't think much of the idea, but, based on your great quilt, I am going to revisit that idea!

Dina
