Birth of a quilt
2 Attachment(s)
Some time ago a picture of a beautiful quilt was posted, called Ode to the 1930's. I purchased the pattern. My mom was born in 1924 and grew up in the 30s, she loved bright colors, flowers, birds and handcrafts. I'm sure she would have loved the design! She died 14 years ago and I still miss her very much. I'm going to call my quilt Ode to my Mom and I thought it would be nice to share the progress of this quilt with you all. I hope you like that too.
Here are the blocks I made yesterday: and this one I made today. The applique block was too small due to pilot error :D I didn't read the instructions too well before starting :( I'm going to take my time as I do have other projects too :) |
very pretty i love tour quilt
Lovely blocks...I am sure your mom would have loved them too. I know my mom would have. I miss my mom also.
Beautiful blocks and title! I look forward to see your progression as you create this wonderful treasure!
What a beautiful quilt for you to treasure and I am sure lots of memories will be stitched in to it
Great start, be sure to keep us posted as this quilt progresses.
It is so pretty, I like the patterns you are using! I know you are thinking about your mom as you work-may you have lots of happy thoughts of her!
I would probably put a small border around the applique one and use it anyway. It's much to pretty to discard and would add so much to your quilt.
very nice quilts:)

Thank you all for your lovely comments! Yes, lots of memories, some make me sad but most make me smile :)
@dlong: it was part of the block so I had to redo it but I could use the leaves again so it wasn't a big problem. Here's the last block for today: Martha Washington's Wreath. I found out I don't like needle turn applique so I fused the parts and when all applique blocks are finished I will stitch them on my machine. |
It is going to be a gorgeous quilt!!! I love the colors.
Your mother would love this to-be quilt...and to have it named for her.

Meet my mom and my boys. It's the last picture ever taken of her, a few weeks before she passed away.
I did this quilt, too and loved working it! You're doing a great job with your blocks!
A fitting gift for Anael's anael. The last block is particularly lovely. Just keep those fingers balanced now!
LOL oksewglad, the balancing part is getting hard :D I might not have enough fingers :p
Oh I know what you mean. I started a big quilt using 1 1/2" strips and squares to make 9P. Then all the little trimmings are all 1 1/2" long so off they went into the 1" or 3/4" box and now have started a couple of little mini's with those:shock: Then Barbara Brackman starts a new quilt blog on Women's Rights. I decided to downsize and make 4 " blocks. Will require some PP. They are 8" blocks. If you are interested here's the link, but certainly don't want you to tip over with too much weight on any given finger:D

Thanks for the link, I started that one last week Saturday :D :D But I'm doing the 8" blocks. I still have enough 4.5" Jane blocks to do!
Its just beautiful, post more pics as you go along. Love the colors too.
It's gonna be gorgeous! Can't wait, to see the finished quilt!!
It's going to be gorgeous. (I also miss my mom and grandmother - 21 yrs ago and sometimes I still cry)
Your work is wonderful. Your quilt will be beautiful, please show us when you are finished.
Very pretty, I love all the blocks.

Here are today's blocks. # 31 Monkey Wrench and # 32 Aunt Dinah
So glad it was an easy fix. Your applique sounds like mine. I'd much rather do anything on the machine that I can than to hand stitch. I love the latest blocks!

A great pair, Anael! The red stars look familiar--have you been snitching fabric from the PC campfire?:D This will be such a tribute to your mom. Bright and cheery to make up for those teenage years. :) It's been 34 years since mine has been gone. I think that no matter how old you are or how long your mom's been gone, you will always miss her.
Thanks oksewglad! Yes, I've been snitching from the PC club :D
Your quilt is so pretty! Such a wonderful way to remember your mom.
An awesome tribute to your mom.
when one block is "wrong", i make a pillow! lol

That's really awesome...I lost my Dear Little Mother year and a half ago and I honestly don't feel the pain lessening....I find it worse the longer she's gone, the more I realize she isn't coming back.....God it makes me so sad!! Sorry, your quilt is beautiful :)
This is going to be a beauty when it is all done and a special reminder of your mom although who needs reminders of our wonderful mothers. Love you mom.
Thanks for sharing this project with us. Pat |
I love it, can't wait to see more!

Have a Blessed day Ellen |
Very lovely and I am glad you will have this quilt to remind you of the wonderful memories.
Anael, I so admire your work.....and as for "Mom".....I lost mine about 14 yrs ago but she is always with me (in my mind and heart). I guess most of us miss our mom's......I sure do and often think about her when I sew.....she couldn't....literally....sew a button on. When I would go to her house, there was always a pile of things to mend....LOL! I laugh everytime I think of that.....Her mother sewed....in fact, I have several quilts she did....but somehow, my own mother just didn't have the skill nor did she want it. However, she was very creative and loved the arts.....I think this quilt in your mother's honor is fabulous......it will warm your heart for years ahead and your family's as well......thanks for sharing this very personal journey with us.....:)
I love the purple fabric you used for these last flowers. Just perfect!!! |

Thank you all so much!
Wendiq: my mom learned me how to sew when I was about 9 or 10 years old. We always did a lot of things together and even did competitions a few times LOL. Quilting is not common here so I didn't learn that from her. I started quilting about 2 years ago and I know she would have loved it. We liked the same things. A long time ago I lived in Germany, was going back to the Netherlands but when the time came to move I was in hospital. My mom did the move and did all the home decoration and I had no clue :D I loved what she did! Here's the block I did today. It's block # 25 Gentleman's Fancy. |
Ode to your Mom is a great pattern name and I'm sure she would be proud of you for it. I love the English ivy block
would make a pretty quilt top just with that one pattern. thanks for sharing. My mother did all of our quilts by treadle sewing machine and hand quilting. remember the quilting frame hanging from the ceiling in the living room. when she wasn't working on the quilting it was pulled up to the ceiling out of the way. My dad made the frames for her. as you said I miss them both daily. Good luck with the rest of your quilt. |
