Birthing was painful...glad I had c-sections!

Ha. My first " birthing" experiment. And I will say, if I do this again, I will just bind all the angled edges....
Lesson learned-use the same color backing fabric as the fabric on the outside edge of the top! I used a white on white for the backing.
I basted the top to the batting and then SITD to anchor the 2 pieces. Pin basted the backing, right sides together, to the top 2 layers, and stitched around the edges, leaving an opening through which I "birthed it". Took a lot of fiddling and basting to keep the backing edge from peaking out...stitched around the outer edge 1/8". Now I need to decide how to quilt this.....open to any and all suggestions! The snowflake blocks are stumping me.

I made this same table runner and I am not particular fond of birthing either. I just would ditch it and then outline the snowflakes the best that you can securing the three layers together.

You have described one of the problems with the birthing method. There is also the problem that the front and back are usually not exactly the same size so you can get some wrinkles in the back when quilting if you are not careful. I would outline stitch the snowflakes and SITD along the lighter blue border fabric seam lines. Pretty runner!

Very pretty, love the colors. I have never tried the birthing method--don't think I will either! :D

I don't mind birthing either, but that looks like it would be difficult to do this with.
I birthed a blue jean with a fleece backing, I really did not want hand sew a binding on.
Very pretty! I love the blues too!

Beautifully done table runner. I'm not a fan of birthing.

Beautiful runner, very nicely done.

If you are confident with a stipple or a tight meander, do the light blue and the white coming up to the snowflake but not stitching on the snowflake, then a simple stitch in the ditch between dark and light blue to hold it all together.

You've done a great job. I want to try this pattern before Christmas.

Your table runner is very pretty. The joy your table gives you this winter season will be worth the work I am sure. I was going to birth my granddaughter's cuddle quilt. Now I am having second thoughts. The cuddle fabric is so soft and slick, I am somewhat concerned.
