Black and White Abstract Art, a wip

1 Attachment(s)
I started working on this quilt yesterday. It's going to be a graduation gift for my DGS in Florida. His Mom suggested these colors, which are WAY out of my normal comfort zone. But I've got to tell you, I'm having so much fun making these high contrast, contemporary (at least to me they look contemporary) blocks. These are finishing at 12 inches, so if I keep plugging along I should have the top finished in a couple of weeks. I plan to quilt it with wavy vertical lines, that will help to keep me on schedule.

Your guilt is very interesting. I really enjoy looking at each block individually. I also like the colors.

LOVE IT! I will bookmark this post so I can come back to see your progress.

Love the modern look. Black and white quilts are great, and your spots of red really add a fun punch of color. Can't wait to see the whole quilt :)

Oh! I love this - each individual block looks like a work of art. Are you going to sash them?

redquilter 03-29-2013 12:28 PM

This type of quilt is out of my comfort zone also but I have to say, you're doing a wonderful job and I really like it. It's a great gift.

Great modern look!

RedGarnet222 03-29-2013 02:22 PM

It is so cool! I love the beginings of your dgs's quit.

dhanke 03-29-2013 02:24 PM

I haven't decided yet about sashing or how to set them. I may go with a staggered kind of of set sashing with some little red squares scattered throughout.

Great! I love red--I'd add too much. Quilting is a bit like cooking...add a bit of this and a dash of that. Freddy Moran thinks of red as neutral.

I think this will be a beautiful quilt when you are finished with it! Love the blocks so far!

joyce blint 03-29-2013 04:44 PM

This is going to be sharp. Can't wait to see more.

LindaMRB 03-29-2013 04:47 PM

This is going to be very interesting and a great gift. I have trouble going outside my comfort zone, too, so congrats to you for doing it. I think you're going to be proud of this one when it's done.

I love this. It's very masculine, in a sophisticated way but not an "in your face man cave" like way. Beautiful work.

This is going to be an outstanding quilt when finished. Are you making up these blocks as you go along or do you have some sort of pattern to go by? I'll also be watching for more finished blocks.

rainsprite 03-29-2013 06:33 PM

What pattern did you use for your art quilt, which by the way I love? Thank you, hope you will post the finished quilt!.

It should hang on display in an art gallary!

littlehud 03-29-2013 06:47 PM

Wow. That is so cool. I love black white and red together and the contemporary feel of the blocks. Great job so far. I can't wait to see it finished.

ctmhjenn 03-29-2013 08:27 PM

Love this, I love the modernistic look and the masculine colors. Cool!

Mariposa 03-29-2013 08:29 PM

Neat blocks! I like the black & white idea. Looking forward to seeing your progress with this~

dhanke 03-30-2013 01:33 AM

I didn't use a pattern, just doing some improv piecing, log cabin type construction. I piece a center block and then start adding strips.

I did a workshop on these modern quilts at a craft show last weekend. I rather like them and can't wait to start one myself. I like what you have done with yours so far and look forward to seeing the finished project. Apparently these type of quilts are what young people like....they can't be bothered with triangles and floral fabrics etc. I feel it's good to learn something new.

kateyb 03-30-2013 05:30 AM

I like these blocks. The colors add to the whole design very well. Your quilts are always so interesting and well done.

gabeway 03-30-2013 05:54 AM

Coming along great!

Quiltshaker 03-30-2013 06:35 AM

I bet the end result will be a stunning quilt. Hope to see a photo of this finished beauty.

Very cool and modern. He will love it. I'm sure.

Retired Fire Chief 03-31-2013 03:48 AM

It isn't my taste either, but it is really interesting. If he likes contemporary he's going to love this.

twinkie 03-31-2013 04:09 AM

Very modern looking. I am sure your GS will love it.

Yooper32 03-31-2013 05:04 AM

This sure is way off your usual realm of fun. It is interesting, and what some people really enjoy, like a DGD of mine in CA, but for me, is says nothing to me.
