Ok - I have 3 weeks to finish this thing in order to enter it in the Durham Fair in CT and I already lost a week due to business travel in Polnad and another week due to business travel in Atlanta. Yikes!

I am putting on a 3" black border and then I am going to machine quilt it in 2 sections (even with a 9" bed, I can't handle a 5 foot quilt :-(

Any advice on the quilting pattern? I am thinking of dividing the quilt into 4 sections and doing half circles in each section about 2 inches apart. The pattern is so busy that I don't want to take away from it but I am afraid that lines will be too much.

With the geometric what about circles in circles? Start with smaller ones in the middles and work out to a very large on around the end. It keeps the inward motion going.

mom-6 07-12-2010 04:11 AM

Awesome three dimensional look! I think I would echo the pattern of the design to enhance the dimensionality.

I know the rule of thumb about doing circles on a quilt that has lots of straight lines, but in this case somehow I don't think it would enhance it.

This is a pattern called 'Think Outside the Box' - toadusa.com has a kit that you can order. Several quilters on the forum have made or are in the process of making this - either with the kit or without (I reverse-engineered it). If you do a search, it should come up.

Dodee 07-12-2010 04:41 AM

Thank you. You did a beautiful job on it by the way

Ok my jaw dropped when I saw this quilt.:D. I love the 3D effect. Whatever you decide will only add to the beauty of this quilt.

QuiltingB 07-12-2010 06:43 AM

Awesome quilt! Where did you find the pattern? Was it difficult? I'm looking for you to get a blue ribbon or best in show.

sew_lulu 07-12-2010 06:46 AM

Wonderful, beautiful, marvelous!!

How about doing a simple "X" through the the blocks, IMHO I don't think it would take away from the layered affect. PLUS it would be fast and time is of the essence!

calla 07-12-2010 06:52 AM

Wow, I really like the floating.........good job...........calla/Sue

I love your quilt and tried to look up www.toadusa.com to order a kit and was told the domain was for sale. Is there another way to order the kit or do I have the website wrong?

I just purchased the pattern from toadusew.com. I bought the special edition one because I see a table runner in my future! This will definitely be on my TO DO list.

nwm50 07-12-2010 07:21 AM

I don't know about quilting stitches but I love your quilt! That touch of blue brought out the lovelyness of it !

Candace 07-12-2010 07:21 AM

It's great. I think quilting in circles would be fantatstic.

See the correct address - toadusew.com!! And no, it isn't difficult. This is a standard Log Cabin pattern - the way you manipulate the fabrics is what creates the visual effects. I think that the balck and white probably shows it best.

One word of caution - you do have to be VERY careful when you put the blocks together so that the colored squares line up properly. One of the quilters on this forum had some tips and I would look those up, but I also found that you need to pin, pin, pin!!!!!

jcarilyn 07-12-2010 09:12 AM

It's stunning!!!

MistyMarie 07-12-2010 09:44 AM

I can already envision my color choices. I hope I get the pattern soon. I think I am going to make this for my mom as a surprise.

ramonarivera2010 07-12-2010 09:47 AM

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! very impressed. GREAT JOB!

littlehud 07-12-2010 10:46 AM

That is just beautiful. I love the 3D effect. I would use circles. Sounds good to me.

Ditter43 07-12-2010 10:49 AM

I love the look of the quilt and the illusion it creates. I would highlight that effect by quilting radiating lines out from the center block. Any way you do it, the quilt is a winner!

hobo2000 07-12-2010 10:59 AM

I really love this. I think I would QID around the blue squares and the black squares so it would give a little trapunto effect to the squares in between. Maybe try one corner with a long stitch that you could remove easily. See if it gives the right effect I did this on a Kaffe fasset handkerchief quilt and ir worked beautifully.

Jim's Gem 07-12-2010 11:26 AM

That look great!!!!
