Blocks and Top
 

Hello Quilters! I wanted to drop in to show you these photos of 30 blocks and a top my friend Trudy brought to me. She found these at a AARP store. When she saw them she thought, if anyone would do something with them, it would be me.
They were dingy and stained so I Oxiclean/soaked them and these are before and after photos. The top didn't hold up too well, as I figured, because it was made from an unsuitable cloth. I serged the long edges, but there was no way to finish the hexies and some have raveled out, with just one washing. Does anyone recognize this hexie top pattern?
The Sunbonnet blocks held up well, though. (See the close up of the worse block, before and after.) I don't have any vintage fabric, but I laid this blue and white under, for you to see what you thought of me stripping with it. Lord knows it has enough pink!:D I know it is a cotton, but not like the base of the SB blocks. They are almost like feed sack cloth. When washed they wrinkled up and seem thick, but they I pressed them and they iron out so good. Does anyone know from what year these little dress fabrics were from? I can back it with a muslin, maybe....Let me know your thoughts please, thanks . Oh, I forgot to say, Trudy asked for me to make her twin grand daughters a pillow or something with 2 blocks, if it wouldn't mess up my top. Sunbonnet Sue is an all time favorite of mine. I'm with you on making the one quilt and not pillows as they would not take the wear and tear of pillow usage. The Hexie is fabulous but I don't know the name of the pattern. Could be something she came up with.

What a nice clean up job on the SBS blocks.

Terrific looking 'after' SBS blocks. The hexagon quilt top looks like it would be gorgeous if you can manage to get it together/quilted. Someone put a lot of work into the blocks and the top. I hope you can save it all!

Somebody sure liked pink, didn't they? Am so happy that your friend rescued these projects and they will be put into something of good use. They are darling and so well made. I'm like you--utilize all of the Sues into one project to make the quilt bigger. They certainly cleaned up well! As to the sashing--I don't care for the blue that you have placed near the block. In my opinion, it's "too". I do like the colors in the tiles that the blocks are on though! Can you find something similar that doesn't compete with the many colors in the girl's dresses? The many mottled colors in the tile are good with the blocks.
I have never seen the design of the hexies but certainly interesting. Will quilting secure the pieces that are raveling? Are you hand or machine quilting? The recipient needs to be aware that this quilt may not stand up to heavy use and needs a bit of care if it is to be preserved.

I would back that he is with muslin and quilt it very closely...it is stunning and I would consider it a treasure! I think the fabric is from the 1930’s.

Your SBS blocks look a lot like the ones I worked up for a friend. (see my post here: https://www.quiltingboard.com/pictur...s-t304296.html) The block background was thin, but I did not add anything special to stabilize it. I knew I was going to do fairly heavy quilting there; they held up well.

Those cleaned up nicely. I like the unique hexagon layout. Very cool!

These are great finds. I'm glad you could help the Sunbonnet Sues recover their vivid colors. The hexie is a true original. It will look great on a 1930's era bedframe.:o
