I would suggest to make sure you cut on the line you draw around your template, save you from having to go back and trim them up later. Good luck!!
The smaller circles might be easier to work with but since mine was around 6' x 6' just worked better for me.

Thank you - - that is exactly what I wanted to know. The size and what you found good or what you might change. It might help to be using jean fabric that has been used, versus using new denim, eh?
I remember one show that said if you are using new denim, wash and dry it at least three times before trying to put it into a quilt or project - -for shrinkage, of course, but also to loosen up the weave in order to make the denim more manageable, I am guessing.

Very cool! I have tons of my DH jeans and need to make something, maybe for the "kids" Thanks for the inspiration!

WOW! What a beautiful quilt! You did such an awesome job! It looks heavy-is it?

CarolLady 01-05-2010 09:42 AM

omak - I did use all jeans in this quilt. The other 3 quilts I made did have some store bought jean material in them that I had purchased a long time ago. I needed some contrast color so I used it in them. Another thing omak - I used over 4 -350 yds rolls of thread just in the zig zag stitching. That didn't include sewing the 4 circles together to make my blocks. (36 blocks of 4) And I drew the squares in the circles after I had cut them out. During making the quilt those lines did not always line up so don't get frustrated with it just sew them together "close" to the lines as you can, making sure the circles line up more so than the lines (that will never be seen) You might have better luck than me with that part but I way over thought it. lol
Wine Woman - Yes it is very heavy. I tried to use it on my bed one night and could hardly move around, it was heavy. It is also kind of stiff from the zig zag stitches around all the circles. But I am still very proud of it :)

Pineapple Princess 01-05-2010 09:50 AM

Very cool!

Hey, it's a heart.

I have a bunch of old jeans and shirts saved up and planned to make something similar, but I thought I would leave the edges raggy. You mentioned figuring out a better way to sew them together. Can you explain? Thanks!!!

CarolLady 01-05-2010 01:13 PM

`Lucky I will try to explain. I sewed my circles in "blocks" with 4 circles in each block. I added the flannel, then ironed down the "flaps" I found that I could sew the inside flaps down and stitch around them all without starting and stopping just sewing continuous. That would probably be better explained with a picture :( once the 4 circles were made into blocks I sewed the straight seam to connect them, then fold down the flaps and ironed then do the zig zag stitch as I joined the rows. when joining rows sew your straight seam iron your flaps down put the row you are adding to the inside of the machine and zig zag down the length of the connected rows. (Here is where I was making it harder on myself I'd turn the quilt around and try to shove the big part through the little opening) *Easier way is to go back to the top and start zig zagging down the other side of your flaps so one time you will start sewing on the left hand side of your joined rows and the next time you will start sewing on the right hand side of the rows. I hope this makes sense, if not let me know and I will give it another try to get it right.
I am not sure how you would make it with the raggedy edges - maybe sew further in on the flaps so they fringe?

I totally love it. What's not to love about denim --however it is used. Love your color choices.

What a beautiful quilt. Now I want to make this quilt. It is a wonderful inspiration.Thank you for sharing

omak 01-05-2010 06:53 PM

Don't want to mess up your thread, but if you are wanting to do squares with raggedy edges ... the backing is the denim ... four or five layers of flannel or cotton ... each block is made by putting one layer of denim (right side down) the layers of flannel or cotton, face up on top .... that is what each block is composed of.
When working with denim and that much fabric (you could use less, if you chose to do so) Use a LARGE needle in machine (as in denim- - 16/90 or bigger)
Work with a HALF INCH seam allowance.
For thread, use the upholstery thread/button thread ... it is designed to be used and worn in products that take a lot of handling (couches, pillows, buttons, etc)
You sew the denim right sides together (remember your layers of flannel? - - that is the front of your quilt)
Sew all your blocks together, and then you are going to cut your seam allowances every HALF INCH to the seam ... do not cut through the seam ...
THEN!
Wash your quilt and dry it THREE TIMES ... this will make the cut up seam allowances fray (so you want to make sure you are using cotton, right?)
if they are not frayed enough? Well, take a battery cleaning/wire brush and brush heck out of the seams (or a toothbrush,) but, remember!
There is denim in that seam and a toothbrush is a bit weak for fraying denim ...
anyway, what you will have is a raggedy-edged block on the "right" side ... and the denim, with a smooth side on the back.
Totally different process than the quilt pictured at the top of this thread. <wave>

It looks amazing I just love the checker fabric it goes great with the denim.
Great job

Shorebird 01-06-2010 01:13 PM

WOW - Did you use the pattern from Fons and Porter to make this? The inside looks like the flannel shirts - is it flannel?

Great colors..........nice job!!!

lass 01-06-2010 01:25 PM

Love the heart in the middle.

Lucky Patsy's 01-06-2010 02:31 PM

Carollady, Thanks so much for the explanation of your sewing process. I get it!!! And I know, too, the frustration of trying to maneuver the bulk of your quilt between the needle and the machine!! I have this saved so I can refer to it when I actually start my denim quilt. I really appreciate your willingness to share your expertise!!!

CarolLady 01-06-2010 03:00 PM

Thanks for the compliments and comments.
Shorebird - Sorry but I have never heard of Fons and Porter so no never used the pattern from them. Yes the inside are from flannel shirts, my dad's, my ex's and my sons flannel shirts. Thanks again
Carol

Wow! I just love your positioning of colour and patterns to make the heart and sorround.
This is definite one to put on the to do list. Thanks so much for sharing.

What a great quilt! Was it hard working with the heaviness of denim?

CarolLady 01-11-2010 02:29 PM

Thank you. No it wasn't hard but it was a little tricky until I figured out a better way of doing it. And it isn't really a soft and cuddly quilt because of all the stitching on it. But I did enjoy making it and getting the heart shape in the quilt like I wanted it to be.

Naturalmama 01-11-2010 05:14 PM

Would it be possible to just do a straight stitch near the edges instead of the zig-zag? I know it wouldn't look as neat though...

CarolLady 01-12-2010 04:01 AM

I tried the straight stitch when the zig zag went out on the sewing machine. I didn't care for how it looked. To me the zig zag stitch is more forgiving.. lol But you can try it and see what you think. I did make one circle with a square in the middle and did kind of a test to see what it would look like with the zig zag stitch before I started the whole quilt.

reneebobby 01-12-2010 04:09 AM

Nice work

Naturalmama 01-12-2010 07:21 AM

It still looks fantastic - and it's nice having all kinds of quilts available. With this kind of winter we've been having, a super heavy one would be so welcome!

owlvamp 08-10-2011 08:38 AM

I Love that pattern!! Was it hard?

tammy cosper 08-17-2011 01:00 AM

Great looking quilt!

Patti Mahoney 09-20-2011 09:18 AM

Wow, great quilt. I bough a whole Rubbermaid bin of already cut squares from a lady on Craigslist a few years ago, now I know what to do with them. My first thought was a rag quilt, but I think I've just changed my mind. I love your colors and the idea of using flannel in the middle.
