WOW! Not at all what I expected when opening the topic. This is just spectacular. I do hope your sil will let you enter it in a show somewhere. It deserves to be seen and appreciated by many.

I did this technique once before. Only I didn't know what it was called. I made a quilt on the Doll Quilt Swap for KrisB and did a cardinal because that is North Carolina's state bird, where Kris lives. She said she liked rust colors so I cut out rust colored roses. Kris is the person who told me it was called broderie perse.
Here's a pic of the little quilt I made for her. In this case the cardinal was a print out of a photograph on EQ fabric and that I enhanced with inktense pencils. this was the first quilt I sewed on my singer 301 and how I found out it does great at FMQ (even though I do not... hee hee.)
