I made this book (it is a dollar store brag book) and have put snips of my fabrics in it so I can carry it with me to the quilt shop to match fabrics. Do you have another idea? this one works for me, but would like to know what other quilters do.

As you can see I have marked how much fabric I have already and in some cases have indicated the pattern I am going to use for that fabric(s).

these fabrics are designated for GRANDMOTHER'S FAN

The blue and white is designaed for a drunkard's parth pattern called the LOVE RING. All the pastels are for another quilt

the bottom fabrics need a solid color,so I have a note to look for black or olive green to go with these fabrics

So organized! I'm impressed. I just take a small piece of whatever I am trying to match at the moment.

Me, too. I like oma's way better.

Great idea. Thanks for sharing.

crafterbarbara 11-09-2010 09:45 AM

Great Idea! Today I will get a book at the 99 cents store.

One to fit my purse and always have on hand. Thanks!

quiltinggrandmaca 11-09-2010 09:47 AM

That is a wonderful idea.

KimmieH 11-09-2010 09:49 AM

what a great idea.....you are welcome to come to my house & make me one :)

dasmith2 11-09-2010 09:49 AM

thats a great idea!!

MrsM 11-09-2010 09:51 AM

The nearest quilt shop is an hour away from me. So I try to know what I need or want before I go, otherwise I just wander around totally confused, like a kid at Toys R Us.

MinnieKat 11-09-2010 09:57 AM

Excellent idea! Thanks for sharing!

som 11-09-2010 10:01 AM

great idea/im going to do it

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 11-09-2010 10:03 AM

My purse is filled with scraps I was trying to match at one time or another. A little more organization would be a good idea for me.

redquilter 11-09-2010 10:12 AM

That's a fabulous idea. I usually stick a snippet in my purse, and half the time can't find it once I get to the store!

RedGarnet222 11-09-2010 10:15 AM

I usually paste up a 8 1/2 by 11 pice of computer paper with my fabrics and keep it in the car. I write on it what is needed and use that. I like this idea very much and might go with this instead. Thanks so much for sharing.

This is what happens to me! LOL. Thanks for the tip!

Tippy 11-09-2010 10:19 AM

Excellent Idea!!! putting that on my "to do" list!!

RkayD 11-09-2010 10:47 AM

i actually bought a little book that is just for fabric years ago. I had forgotten about it but found it in a box the other day. I opened it up and it was like a little treasure book..there were snippets of projects from long ago...Fun memories. =)

Quiltforme 11-09-2010 12:16 PM

Oh man I wish I was that organized.I just grab and go and hope to get it right!! I have heard of taking the salvage edge with the color dots to help match I like your idea!

quiltluvr 11-09-2010 12:34 PM

Such a good thing to have on hand when shopping. I'm guilty of forgetting the swatches at home and try to shop from memory. It's good for the stash, but not so good on the wallet or time.......sometimes. :P

Kitsapquilter 11-09-2010 04:06 PM

You are so organized!! Like someone else said I just take a small piece of the fabric I am trying to work with! But your idea is a great thing to have even after the quilt is done. You could go ahead and put the date you finished it and who it went to! And don't forget to put the date you started the quilt, too! Might be interesting to see how long it took when you look in your book in years to come.

joeyoz 11-09-2010 04:12 PM

Well, I usually just wing it, but your idea is awesome.

Mousie 11-09-2010 04:33 PM

beats dragging the fabrics with me!

wesing 11-09-2010 04:48 PM

You can also use a photo album (not the sticky kind - the ones with the plastic pockets) or a regular notebook with sheet protectors. When we moved into our house we used this idea for paint chips and fabric swatches. We never thought to do it with stash.

Wow, I can only aspire to this level of organization. My hats off to you.
I must be the Oscar Madison( remember the odd couple) of quilting!

quiltedlamb07 11-09-2010 04:56 PM

it is a wonderful idea, i started mine back in the summer, thanks for sharing.

plainjane 11-09-2010 05:15 PM

Maybe I could be more productive if I was THIS organized! And your sewing space is probably just as neat and organized!

Mariposa 11-09-2010 05:17 PM

Neat idea! Thanks for sharing it!

amma 11-09-2010 05:23 PM

You are very organized!! I love this idea :D:D:D

mequilter 11-09-2010 05:37 PM

Wonderful idea, I always seem to forget to bring fabric snippets along with me when I go.

earthwalker 11-09-2010 05:52 PM

I've been meaning to do this...but at the moment just carry a few scraps of a current project in a plastic bag. I shall be getting one in a day or two....thanks for the reminder.

jojosnana 11-09-2010 06:01 PM

Gosh you are organized. I usually just focus on one project (for buying) and have little pieces in a plastic envelope and when I come back I empty it and put it in my fabic area to reuse over and over. I do like your idea a lot.

dlspeed1 11-09-2010 06:10 PM

that is a neat idea, :)

tooMuchFabric 11-09-2010 08:26 PM

Very good and useful and do-able tip!
Thanks.

quiltluvr 11-09-2010 08:50 PM

It's good too for when you are out and about shopping, put pieces in that you need a coordinate for, for when you make that "next" or "someday" project.

I agree with your suggestion. I do have that information in my little book. I move each card to the back of the book when the quilt is done and gone. I have not been quilting for very long and it has been an on and off process over the years, so my little book is not full, but I am looking forward to starting a second album. I can spend more time quilting and painting as I am now retired.

I added a tiny drawing of the block made; grandmother's fan on the bottom page and pinwheel on the top page. I also take photos of each quilt when finished and keep an album of all the quilts that I have made over the years.

I have a 'brag book' I use to keep photos of finished quilts with an info card behind each photo. I made a cover for mine...(no pattern just measured book & started cutting & sewing)

But I REALLY like your idea Oma! for carrying scraps to fabric store!! Guess I will have to make me another!

Prissnboot 11-10-2010 05:42 AM

Great idea! If you wanted to go larger, you could try the pages used for baseball cards in a 3 ring binder.

homecaregiver 11-10-2010 06:30 AM

I really like this idea. I am going to try this one. Thanks for sharing this great tip.

Super idea! I get to the quilt store and forget what I wanted. I then think well, I'll wait until I can get the pattern and type material I want. Ends up I get nothing. Thanks for the tip!

AnneT 11-10-2010 06:48 AM

I second this absolutely! Thank you for sharing your great idea with us!
