Your bookmarks are so cute!!!
I like the ones with baseballs. But they're all cute.
Very cute!
Look good Karla! Your 5th grade students will love them!
Your kids will love this batch! Way to inspire and encourage readers!
Yep--5th grade, butterflywing. There are 24 of them this year. They'll get two books along with them. I made observations and questioned them the first weeks of school to discover their likes in the animal/sports areas. They came up with stuff I didn't think came on fabric--but a few ladies on the board lent me a hand--or a square and a strip--and wah lah-the bookmarks were born. They will be very surprised to see the stuff on those bookmarks. Hee hee. :-D
I'm collecting possibilities for years to come when I see something cool on fabric now, especially in sports. Just a 1/4 of a yard goes a long way for these. I've been home sick for two days--so I was able to sit on the couch to finish getting the beads on today. I apologize to admin about the size of the photos. I double checked them on photobucket and they were 600 pixels--but somehow posted bigger. :| |
Those are sew cute! Great job! Your kids are going to be sew blessed with their gifts. Now they will just HAVE to read something to be able to use their presents!
They look so good!! your students will feel so special!
Great job, Karla!!
I'll be sending a package out on Monday/Tuesday. Nothing great for the students, just some cookies. :) |
What a cute gift. I love all the different fabrics you used.
WOW!!! I love how you personalized them for each student :D :D :D
I hope that you get to feeling better soon!!! |
Your students will love them; they're all cute!
I love these. Is this a pattern you designed yourself? I would love to find a bookmark pattern! Wonderful job and a lovely gift for sure.
hugs April |
Thanks everyone!
April--if you scroll down on this page, I put some photos on how to make them there. http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-26803-3.htm They're easy! Good luck! :-D |
Those are absolutely great. You've obviously had a lot of fun putting them all together.
I have a question for you..... I am making bookmarks for my fellow teachers. I gave my DH one earlier and he says it's too thick. The bookmark is simply the quilted front and backing, no filler. How do you get your bookmarks thin enough for the books to lie flat around them? |
Hmm--they don't seem too thick at all--well they are compared to a cardboard one, but the book would lay flat enough. I have muslin between mine. Maybe it's a personal preference? Fifth graders don't think too deeply on how flat their books lie.

He is fussy. Guess I'll try lots of starch a iron those suckers down! I have some fusible webbing that was recommended in a pattern, and wondered if you might have that in the middle. Now I know. Thanks. |
They look great Karla and the kids will love them! Hope you are feeling better.
Don't know how I kept missing these , but they are GREAT  And I book marked how to make them, THANKS for shaing
Wow they turned out great--even found the lizard gecko type fabric!
This is a terrific idea and love the fabrics. If someone is concerned with thickness why not try Heat 'N Bond between the layers. They trim, punch holes, add ribbon or string and instant gratification. Matter of fact I think I will make some over the weekend to tuck into our Christmas cards. I will admit that I like the ones you made better.
I love them.
those are awesome. i'll take a horse one  ;)
Those are terrific Karla!!!
Awesome as always Karla!! You are such a caring teacher, wish there were a lot more like you that cared for the kids so much! They're gonna love them so much!

I love my job. I missed 2.5 days this week. I wrote this:
Missing the Chalk by Karla Borglum Santoro I am a teacher. I revel in fractions, triangles, long division, the government of Canada, explorers, political cartoons, poetry, Lit Circles, book reports. I love the sound of chalk on green boards. Sore throat strikes. I can make it. Sore throat drops safe me. I don’t want to miss the fast food fact research. Lost voice. I can make it, I don’t want to miss the practice for the Unit 4 math test Or the reading of the next anthology story. My students kindly whisper with me. A turn for the worse. Fever. Head hurts. After 90 minutes of trying to get the worse to pass so I can be their teacher, it’s clear I’m losing. I can’t make it. A sub will take my place. I’ll miss the picking of the provinces. I’ll miss the fast food fat discoveries. I‘ll miss the first research in the library. At home I sip tea with honey as I watch the clock and envision their pencils skritching across lined paper as they pour out ideas in a free write. I’m curious how many papers filled my edit tray. I hear “Mrs. Santoro, do you know how much fat is in those milkshakes you like?” I hope they did well on the Unit 4 Math test. And I wonder if they missed me as much as I missed them. |
Like I have said before - Karla is a wonderful teacher ad writer. I love the way you care Karla!!!
Karla, your poem surely rings a bell with me. It was so hard to miss school. It's a reality check, though -- when you return, you know that they were fine without you (but you miss them all the same). Hope you're feeling better.
Those are all so cute. What great Christmas gifts.
Karla,
Once again they are beautiful! And I have bookmarked the directions on how to make them so I am going to have to do that sometime this week! Thanks again! Hugs April |
Great idea
You always do a great job on these. Makes me want to reach right into the computer and take some.....
How did the kids like them?
