This is a picture of the Mariners Compass I have made up. The pattern does not call for a border but I was thinking of putting one on. Should I?

mommamac 03-12-2011 06:10 AM

I think a border would tie it altogether - I say 'yes'

Murphy 03-12-2011 06:12 AM

I love the mariners compass. Yes, I think a border would be lovely. Thank you for sharing.

katier825 03-12-2011 06:12 AM

Wow, that's pretty! Personally, I am a fan of borders. I generally use 2, a narrow inner border and wider outer border. To me, it's the equivalent of adding mats to a picture frame. The picture alone can be nice, but it really stands out with the matting. Same thing with quilts.

I'd chose one of the mid to darker tones for an inner border and a lighter one for the outer border, then either the same as inner or another similar tone for binding. JMHO :)

Lay out some fabrics and audition them. It helps to decide.

stpatmom 03-12-2011 06:13 AM

I think a border would work well also. Go for it!!!

gollytwo 03-12-2011 06:14 AM

Beautiful quilt.
I usually don't like borders, but think this quilt needs one - not too big though

DogHouseMom 03-12-2011 06:14 AM

Ditto - it's calling for a border. One of the darks that you used in the sashing.

PaperPrincess 03-12-2011 06:16 AM

I vote for a border also. Great quilt!

jillaine 03-12-2011 06:29 AM

I second the double-border idea-- narrow then a wide, but not too wide.

BeeNana 03-12-2011 06:33 AM

I agree. It is lovely and you should be proud.

laughingquilter 03-12-2011 07:19 AM

I vote yes - I like how borders pull everything together.

Justquilting 03-12-2011 07:21 AM

I vote yes.
I think a border pulls everything together!
Beautiful quilt!

cjomomma 03-12-2011 07:38 AM

Without a border you would lose some of the sides of the blocks so yes a border would be great.

quiltsRfun 03-12-2011 07:40 AM

I'm a border person. I think even a small one would frame your design and finish it off.

Antdebby1 03-12-2011 07:42 AM

Beautiful quilt. I vote for a small border with a wider border to finish it off.

stacey65 03-12-2011 07:44 AM

very nice but i think a border would set it all off

TerryQuilter 03-12-2011 08:23 AM

Go for the border!

needles3thread 03-12-2011 08:45 AM

Yes

emerald46 03-12-2011 08:54 AM

Very pretty...yep even a small border would tie everything together.

AnneT 03-12-2011 08:57 AM

YES!! Another one voting for borders. First a small and then a bit wider outer border would please my eye.

sahm4605 03-12-2011 09:01 AM

I love the quilt. it is fab so far. I too would use at least two boarders. If it were me. I would lay out a couple of fabrics and play with widths and number of boarders till you have one that just screams to you. I like three boarders for some reason. Most of mine end up having three. a very thin 1-2 then a 2 1/2-3 1/2 then a 4 or larger. its like matting and framing a work of art.

Latrinka 03-12-2011 10:27 AM

It would look good either way, but I think I would put a border. very pretty!

I'm with everyone else...go for the border!!!

Mizgoodie 03-12-2011 07:00 PM

Yes, absolutely and your blocks are very nice.

caliquocat 03-12-2011 08:22 PM

I agree, a border would add to the overall look of your quilt. Very nice work!

TracyRenea 03-13-2011 02:24 AM

I think a border would frame it nicely.

What a beautiful quilt you have presented to us. IMHO the quilt would look better with outside borders.

Visualize your quilt as a picture on the wall. See the picture, the matting and then the frame. Sometimes pictures have double mats to help set off the picture. You could even add in a a small piping between border one and border two. I like to have a darker color as the final outside border, and use that fabric for the binding as well. The other alternative to this would be a binding made with all of the different fabrics used in the quilt.

Good luck with your quilt project. Please keep us updated with pictures.

I like the two borders!

kimscruzer 03-13-2011 04:12 AM

I vote , Yes.

19angel52 03-13-2011 04:17 AM

Definitely a border. I think borders really help frame a quilt - and adds such a nice focus to the quilt!

Lady-T 03-13-2011 04:30 AM

BEAUTIFUL!! I vote for a border also.

suekenyon 03-13-2011 04:56 AM

Definitely a border...already very pretty.

Chay 03-13-2011 05:07 AM

Border. Think of it as a mat for a picture - it is the finishing touch that makes the picture stand out. Love the colors you used, that's a great pattern.

nstitchs 03-13-2011 05:12 AM

yes to the border, very nice job

jtquilts 03-13-2011 05:14 AM

Your blocks are stunning! I vote for borders, too. Love your work.
