A bunch of simple charity quilts--all new quilters should look and be encouraged
9 Attachment(s)
The last couple of days I've spent binding 14 charity quilts. We tied them earlier in the summer, with the help of young people who were at my house. However, things got busy and I didn't get them bound--til the last couple of days. Hubby is off teaching in Turkey and I am trying to focus on getting these types of things done.
So here they are. All of you "new quilters" can be encouraged. These are SIMPLE, simple, simple. But you know...they will all be gladly taken-- 1. my first quilt I attempted and almost threw away because I used fabric too heavy--and I couldn't get the points right. I put it away til lately--I decided to "just finish it and donate it". I'm sure it will get taken quickly. 2. misc. 4 patches--mostly donated patches, but I added a few to make enough for a quilt. 3. pattern I saw on on Linus quilts, I think--somewhere they talked about simple quilts--the fabric was really cute so I didn't want to cut it up too small. 4. Chinese coins in pink--totally scrappy (except for the pink) 5. Batman - panel that I added borders to figuring the kids will hone in on the Batman so that is the important thing. The rest is just to make it big enough to keep the child warm. 6. zig zag. Someone posted this idea here this year. Made this one and have another one ready to go, once again, using scraps. 7. blue dog for kids. same idea as nr. 3 8. print/tan donated squares. Donated by a church in IN, I believe--I just sewed the squares together. Easy. 9. browns/greens 2 patch. |
nr. 10-14

nr. 10 baskets--all donated blocks--some were rather strange sizes--mostly washed out colors, but decided to try to use them anyway
nr. 11 blue and gold unicorns nr. 12 blue and pink 2 patch, my kids helped me sew squares together at Christmas nr. 13 purple and orange 2 patch, my kids helped me piece it at Christmas time nr. 14 donated top--I just had to finish it |
WOW you are one busy woman. Great quilts and I know that they will be loved. Thank you for doing this. BrendaK

Wonderful............all of them...............................kind thing to do............

Actually I probably have 30 more that need to be finished but I'm taking a break from finishing anymore up for now. I want do some more piecing or finish up three that I want to FMQ. My goal is eventually to FMQ them instead of tying them, but I want to get better at it first.
OK, OK....I do prefer piecing. :) |

Wonderful, wonderful work. One of the ladies I go to class with is in a quilt guild that makes and donates a great number of quilts. One thing she said that sticks with me is that "charity quilts can be simple, but they should NEVER be ugly" She is right.
Yours are awesome!! Great job. judy |
The craftsy BOM I'm working on now has my minding thinking I need to donate it but I've been hesitant because of some mistakes I've made. Thanks for posting it gives me courage.

There's something about tying that makes them more "comfy" - they will be loved!
|
that is great. I'm so happy that your are making donation quilts. :) It's always good to give.
They are all wonderful and I bet when they find new homes, they will be cherished. :) Thank you so much for sharing. |
Great work! I love that it was a group effort. Someone making the top, the kids helping to tie, and your wonderful binding work. Can't get any better than that!
|

If someone asks me for a quilt (because they have heard that we have them to give away), I often give them one or more--one for each person in the family if I think it is needed. Apparently word gets around. At Christmas time, we give away a lot because of a special outreach we do and some of the ladies "win" a quilt in a lottery/drawing (a free lottery one--all they have to do is put their name and address in a box and we draw it--there is no money involved). It started because I think all ladies need something pretty in their lives. Too many times the things people had here were rather stark (as things have become much more available here, this situation has gotten much, much better). Then, I knew that many ladies in the US have unfinished and half finished projects sitting around, gathering guilt. :) I asked my supporting churches' ladies' groups if they had anything I could either pass along to ladies in Belarus, Ukraine, Latvia, Lithuania or here in Poland (as in supplies). I got a lot of misc. stuff and in with that was some rather ugly fabric. I couldn't decide what to do with it, so I read that if you cut up even ugly fabric small enough, it can be beautiful in the end--that started it as I really hadn't planned on making quilts, per se, but in passing along craft supplies. In the meantime, we had started an official charitable organization here. So, it is through this organization that I do this--but this organization is "us". I don't make people bring any documents to show how much they make each month, etc. One other reason I originally started was to help those whose houses burned down as annually it seems several people lose their homes and often it is the poorer people and the houses are public housing. The houses were left abandoned after WW2 because they were previously Jewish summer homes and for obvious reasons, after the war, no one returned to claim them or the land. They have become public housing as the gov't can't really sell the land. They are often not insulated well and are rather cold in the winter (one reason they burn down so often is that they are overloaded with extension cords because people are trying to keep warm). I try to make them pretty. Sometimes people give me tops to finish. I don't always like them, but I finish them. Then, I offer the quilts to the ladies to choose from and they choose one they like. Often their choices aren't my choices, but that's why I like to have a variety to choose from. If a mom comes with a child, they often give the child the chance to choose their favorite. I try to give away or make only things that I would like--which is a problem as I tend to do too many flowers!!!! Here are a few pictures. Some are from Christmas time, some are just misc. people I've heard about. I've been given quilts before by several different church groups, so I know how much I love them. I ask people to let me get pictures so I can document to people that I really do give quilts away! :) |

Amazing! So many beautiful quilt, they will be loved!

They're all great!
I used to worry so much about the pattern and how grand it had to be...then I noticed that I didn't finish the 'grand' ones. So the charity quilts I work on are simple designs, often only 2 or 3 fabrics. And I have fallen completely in love with panels. |
You sure have been one busy little bee! You are so good to do these little charity quilts!
