Can anyone identify this pattern?

I was at a quilt show yesterday and saw this quilt - there was no pattern listed on the quilt - up close it looked like log cabin squares of different sizes (almost like a bargello with small and larger pieces) - anyway it was all square edges but made this really cool design that looks like curves - I really love this - does anyone know what this is?

I don't know why the pic posted twice - oops.

yourstrulyquilts 05-05-2012 07:11 AM

No - I looked at it up close - it was definetly pieced and the blocks were log cabin blocks - just different sized log cabin blocks. I really like the swirly aspect of the quilt.

QuiltnLady1 05-05-2012 07:20 AM

Wow -- I don't know the pattern but if that was pieced it was a lot of work. Great looking quilt.

nativetexan 05-05-2012 07:22 AM

yin yang, perhaps log cabin style. can't find anything yet though.

hairquilt 05-05-2012 07:22 AM

Yup-looks like a bargello variation of the log cabin-its really awesome!!

JoyjoyMarie 05-05-2012 08:51 AM

It is a beauty of a quilt. I have no clue about the pattern.

QM 05-05-2012 08:57 AM

It's an uneven log cabin, but I have not seen it used like that before.

RedGarnet222 05-05-2012 09:05 AM

I don't know this exact pattern. It is very pretty. There is a book out by marti mitchell called, "Creating Curves with Log Cabins", that might steer you in the right direction to make one of your own. It is ISBN:0-88195-832-8

RedGarnet222 05-05-2012 09:09 AM

I looked it up for you on the web and this is the listings I found if you want to check it out.

ordered it on Amazon...love the website.

Sandy64 05-05-2012 04:34 PM

It looks like a modern interpretation of a log cabin. Sandy 64

Beautiful :)

joyce888 05-05-2012 06:44 PM

Don't know what it is but I did buy that book off amazon that was suggested. Hope it's in there.

Tartan 05-05-2012 07:09 PM

You get the curve effect by using different widths of fabric(logs) to do the log cabin blocks. I have never seen one done as well as that one though.

Very interesting. I played around just a little bit in EQ7 using log cabin blocks with different widths on each side and came up with this. The design can be improved by changing the coloring and orientation of that one block. (They're the same blocks that Barnbum uses in her floral log cabins.)

mighty 05-05-2012 08:37 PM

No idea! So pretty!!!!

catladyquilts 05-06-2012 02:54 AM

my first thought is an uneven, very precision log cabin. that took a LOT of planning and prep work. it is gorgeous

Tartan 05-06-2012 05:50 AM

Dunster, that looks neat! I especially like how you have the fish shape in some of the arrangements. Wouldn't it look cool with different blues in the background and orange goldfish sprinkled about?

AnnT 05-07-2012 05:12 AM

Don't know what it's called but it's pretty!

josie bass 05-07-2012 05:54 AM

This is very different it looks like a 10 minute block to me in some place. i have no idea what it is. if you find out please let me know.

I think you hit the nail on the head - that is what it looked like up close - I could see the log cabin blocks were different sizes just like you have shown. Its interesting that we have never seen this before - I don't have EQ - is there anyway to print up instructions for this? I would love to make one.

MimiBug123 05-07-2012 08:09 AM

Wow! It's definitely a variation of a log cabin and it sure looks like tons of work!

Sheepshed 05-07-2012 10:15 AM

Its a log cabin with the lights and darks of different widths. For instance, if you made the lights in a block about finished 1 inch wide, and the darks 1/2 inch wide (finished)... they form a curve in the block. Some of the blocks reverse that *wide/narrow & dark/light* assembly. Look close LOL.

Whether the small square in the center starts out light or dark also changes. ummmm you would need a design board and careful attention..... You could vary the # of rounds in each block, and colors of your choice, its still a log cabin.... Good Luck :)

quiltapillow 05-07-2012 10:48 AM

I found one in Colorful,Casual,Confy Quilt book, Tessellating Sea Horses--pg.134; looks like Sea Horses and if you take the pattern and just move the block a little you may get the design in your picture. Hope this helps. It is by Donna Radner. Hope this helps. Have fun!

maxnme01 05-07-2012 01:04 PM

LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

This might help: http://www.quiltingassistant.com/logcabinblock.html

It has a lot to do with the width of the "logs" in each block but I'd have a dickens of a time figuring out each one on this. Please post more info if you find it.

Then again, it looks a bit like each block is a "mini bargello" and the block that butts up to it is coordinated to create the flow of color. Just a guess.

It is beautiful! Looks like a lot of work.

HummerGardenCrafts 05-07-2012 06:33 PM

Never saw this pattern before!

Rose_P 05-07-2012 08:37 PM

I have no idea of the name, but staring at it is a little like finding shapes in clouds. I definitely see a red bird at the top, and a dark goose on the left.

knlsmith 05-07-2012 11:19 PM

Wow. Thats cool!

Rebecca VLQ 05-08-2012 02:23 AM

Wow, this got my wheels turnin' this morning! What an awesome quilt! :D Thanks, Dunster for the EQ7 pic!

Just Me... 05-08-2012 02:38 AM
