In your opinion, what would this block pattern be? The picture is poor and doesn't show the block well, but it is the only picture I have. This quilt was stolen from me in the late 1980's and was made by my father's mother. She passed in the early 1940's. The sashing was light blue, the setting blocks and binding were pink, the backing was white, cotton batting.

Ignore the person and the room and try to visualize the quilt if you can. It is difficult. Sorry.

It looks like a honeycomb set 4 to a block

sueisallaboutquilts 06-03-2011 04:45 AM

Is there any way you could take a picture of part of the quilt and post it?
I really can't tell from this one. But it's a cute pic :)

I agree. You can see the "X" formed in the block by her knee.

Apparently it was stolen. :(

purrfectquilts 06-03-2011 05:17 AM

I no longer have the quilt. It was stolen from me in the late 1980's and probably sold to an antique place in Gulfport, MS. I will check on your honeycomb idea. I was thinking Kansas City Dugout block maybe. Except instead of putting the blocks together side by side, she separated them with sashing. That is a double bed, the quilt is on and it came down pretty far on the sides so I am thinking maybe 5 blocks across plus a 3 or 4 inch sashing, using maybe a 12 inch block. Have to try it out on paper. This is a new project and I am wanting to duplicate this as closely as possible.

I have been looking for a long time for the right shade of light blue and pink. The solids for 1930's colors are too dark.

Good luck! So sorry to hear about the quilt theft!

debcavan 06-03-2011 05:30 AM

Ripped on Scotch 06-03-2011 07:03 AM

to me it looks like 4 signature blocks in an X pattern.

luvspaper 06-03-2011 07:45 AM

I reminds me of the String X pattern by Bonnie at quiltville.com....but without the scrap strings.... and with each block being smaller.....http://www.quiltville.com/stringx.shtml

So sorry to hear that it was stolen!

It looks like the lattice quilt block to me.

Here's one.

Having said that, I think Ripped with Scotch is right. Looks more like
the signature block.

I think you are right. This does indeed look more like it than the Kansas Dugout although they were similar. And the size seems appropriate too.

Big thanks!!!

jackied 06-03-2011 10:47 AM

It looks like 4 Indian Hatchet blocks put together. I have made the single IH block. Or some books call it a signature block.

Yes!! I think you guys are all wonderful. This looks just right to me with appropriate sashing and cornerstones...this will do just fine.

Another reason I am certain this is it, but I don't have a picture to show you....there was another quilt done in a bubble gum pink, medium green with plain parts in the centers and signatures of all the church people were embroidered on them. This quilt I have restored and given to my brother. I don't know if he kept it or not.

Both quilts had been given to my parents when they married.

Thanks a bunch!!

duckydo 06-04-2011 05:19 AM

there is a post on here today from tothenci and it is a link to go to utube and in there is a demo by a Sharon Craig and it is the X block looks like the block in this picture

QuiltNama 06-04-2011 06:27 AM

It looks like Indian Hatchet with the blocks pointing to the center to form the X's.

ALSO THOUGHT MIGHT BE KANSAS CITY DUG OUT OR SIGNATURE BLOCK WITHOUT THE SIGNATURE OF COURSE

Weenween 06-04-2011 08:07 AM

TO K WHITE YOU ARE ONE SMART LADY AND CAN SEE REALLY WELL ALSO THANKS FOR HELPING THAT LADY THIS BOARD IS AN AWESOME PLACE.

playswithcolor 06-04-2011 08:17 AM

kinda looks like a pattern my grandmother called indian hatchet, with 4 blocks put together to make an x.

She made one out of "cutaways" from a shirt factory. She used striped fabrics for the X's and solids for the triangles. She centered a stripe on the diagonal piece. Even with different width striped fabrics it helped unify the stripes.

She set hers edge to edge, no sashing.

She made hers in the 1960's, but said that it was an old pattern.

It looks to me like a type of signature block. A strip of fabric is stitched on the diagonal of a square. Any measurement can be used. Perhaps this pic will show what I mean. The center strips in your pic are a bit wider.
If you need to 'age' your fabrics to try and duplicate the quilt, try coffee staining, or maybe a light tan Rit dye

purrfectquilts 06-04-2011 10:35 AM

I have aged a lot of fabrics with tea or coffee. And I have tested it many times and it does not wash out which used to surprise me.

I have had many PM's and lots of good ideas and I have printed things to try them out.

Thank you all so much for your help. Hope I can be as helpful to someone else in return.

Now to start collecting more fabrics and get started. LOL

Have a great weekend!

Quilter2B 06-04-2011 10:35 AM

Sorry to hear about the quilt theft; isn't amazing how great everyone is here - so helpful!

krafty14 06-04-2011 11:51 AM

To me it looks like those signature blocks that I see so often lately where there is a light colored area diagonally across the block, with a darker print on either side. Only, in the block in the picture, the area that would have been for the signature is the darker print fabric and the half triangles on either side are the lighter prints. Then it looks like four are put together with the signature area points coming together in the center to form an X. Then a sashing around the newly formed X block. (make sense?) Ann

My grandmother always had one of those kinds of lights over her bed. I was just thinking about that light not too long ago. Love the photo. Yes, a lot has changed since then, some good and some not so good.
