I've fallen in love with this block, and have lots of bright fabrics to make it with, however, the person who posted it on Flickr (bemused.typepad.com) called it the 'whirling dervish' and whenever I search for that, I come up with different patterns.

Any one know a more common name for it, and especially where I can get a pattern/instructions?

Many thanks for your help ahead of time!

It sorta looks like a Kaleidoscape Pinwheel, except with 12 blades instead of 8

mom-6 07-19-2011 02:30 PM

That looks to me like a Dresden plate variation with points instead of rounded.

I think I saw it on Quilter's Cache

I was thinking this also after i posted above because of the center circle.

This is one on Quilter's Cache (without the center circle)

This one is really close, although it has 8 blades rather than the 12 on the original.

Let's keep looking? I really really really appreciate your help!!!

I found it described as an Appalachian Sunburst...It was painted on a barn and described as traditional, but I haven't found directions.

Are you good with graph paper. It wouldn't be hard to draw out. Yet me know if you want help.:)

Corky 07-19-2011 03:13 PM

No, really? and You betcha!!

Seriously, you are very kind to offer. I would love to have the instructions. :)

I'm not having any luck at all finding the pattern. I'm sorry

Corky 07-19-2011 03:16 PM

Thanks so much for looking. I have spent the past hour or so looking through all the patterns on Quilter's Cache. Having a great time, but no luck with it, either.

Lots of eye candy there!!

I just did some more research--didn't find the pattern, but found the most inspiring and beautiful story about Donna Sue Groves, the woman behind the barn quilts. If you have a moment, read this and you'll love the barn quilts even more. Sounds like you'll have help drafting the block. Here's link for the story:

Is there a way to contact the person that posted it? Maybe she has instructions?

It looks like a "Buzz saw" pattern to me and I like the colors.

Corky 07-19-2011 03:38 PM

I've emailed her. No reply. It was from Jan 2007.

Crossstitcher 07-19-2011 03:42 PM

Could you not use the pattern on Quilter's Cache and make a circle for the middle and hand sew it on? Just a thought.

Corky 07-19-2011 03:45 PM

Well, I could, but I want the 12 blade block, and Quilter's Cache doesn't have it, just the 8 blade block. I like the 12 blades.

Thanks, though! I thought I might use a yoyo for center circle, too.

Not the Buzz saw, but that, too, is an interesting block.

Jan (the gal from the bemused.typepad blog) just wrote me back. Here is the pictures she sent me.

She made the templates and added 1/4 inch. I wonder if there isn't an easier way? Even if all the blades are the same and then trimmed to a square?

Any ideas?

Hey there, DakotaMaid! Do you see the original pattern I just posted? Does that help you draft a unit where all the blades are the same, but then trimmed to the square or should I use templates?

Thanks for your help!

Is it a McKim Studios Pattern illustrated here?

Thanks for the correction on the Buzz Saw too y'all.

Found another fascinating link while trying to help you.
Sorry my EQ skills are just not up to it, I've fussed around this evening but... not happening.

I dont know either, I hope someone can help you ! I really like it too !

quilterella 07-21-2011 02:50 AM

Bethany Reynolds " Stack and Whack pinwheel (kalediscope...sp)" is what it looks like to me when I googled it.

LaurieE 07-21-2011 04:11 AM

What 'easier way' are you looking for? For that pattern there really is no 'fast way' to piece it together.

I want to thank you for the pattern. I have just found another quilt I want to make.

quilter68 07-21-2011 05:30 AM

This old pattern looks like a Kansa City Star pattern. That newspaper printed a new pattern everyday. There are books of these patterns.

hoppyfrog 07-21-2011 05:59 AM

I have a midget block pattern called "Wheel of Fortune". The only difference I can see is the tips of the blades touch the corner QST's. It's paper pieced.

Hello I have worked on this pattern for the last 4 days i went to the libary and enlarged the pattern pieces and cut it out and this is what i came up with. I used all the same colors with white.

Corky 07-21-2011 09:53 PM

Wowzer! You are amazing. Will you share the pattern with us?

And who is that handsome fella in the picture?

Corky 07-21-2011 09:55 PM

How much did you enlarge it and what size is your finished block?

bezzie58 07-21-2011 10:09 PM

I printed out the page you gave us then i enlarged it 210 %
i cut the pieces and made templates adding 1/4 inch and went from there when it called for 12 different prints i just used 1 and cut all the other pieces out of the second color(purple and white)it comes out to be 15 inch block

I have seen it as saw tooth fan, fireball and a couple of other names. It is a traditional pattern. when I did it I took it from Quiltpro's library.

ljptexas 07-22-2011 03:53 AM

I think PP would be easier. If I find a pattern I like, I instantly think, "Can I convert it to PP?" then draft my own patterns. I have 2 filing cabinet drawers full, SO I NEED TO STOP! I'll never get to use them all.

You did a great job. In just 2 colors it looks like one of my husbands table saw blades!

BOY! Is my face red!

I was going through some of my quilting books and found this one. Arrgh! It is the pattern I fell in love with! Right on the cover!

I am so shocked that I had it all this time!

Thanks for all your help. I'll post pics when I do a few blocks.

This is the pattern we've been looking for!
