Can't see the forest for the trees.

On my second attempt to learn to quilt, I took a class at Yoder's Dept. store in Shipshewana. We used a book by Dianna McClun and Laura Nownes: Quilts, quilts, quilts !!!. Page 47 - 48 there is a pine tree. We were encouraged to pick a block and repeat it several times to perfect points etc. So I have been working on this (a real UFO) for about 12 years, using up stash and scraps. I have 70 trees and this top is supposed to be 72 x 84. I can see where my skills have somewhat improved with practice. Now to add some borders.
Love this! It's simplicity allows the trees to shine (or stand tall)
I love your beautiful trees. I am so jealous that you got to go to Shipshewana. My husband and I were there in 2017 and I loved the area. In fact, we ordered and had made a bedroom set and we are so pleased with the great workmanship of our new furniture. Now I want to go back. :). Anyway-love your quilt and you did great on it.
Forgot to ask-what kind of border are you adding?
I like the idea of repeating a block for practice.
It works especially well for these trees. Love It! |
I love, love, love it!! The colors you picked are wonderful. When you get tired of looking at it, you can send it here for a vacation.
Cute tree top! If you want to perfect more points, how about a flying geese border? :D The staggered flying geese would look good also if you needed a wider border.
I like flying geese, but am burned out on trying to line things up right now. I'm just putting plain borders on this one and will attempt something else later. This was just scrap after scrap and on my UFO list for years. It's little tub is empty now and it is time to move on. The first border I have picked out is something extra from my peacock quilt, but goldish brown, I had a yard and a half left. So I figured I'd get a 2 1/2 inch cut making a 2 inch border. For the next one ???????????????? I might look at a green. I think I'll make some cornerstones and put flying geese in them. That way we can have birds in the picture.
How cute, Boston 1954, my quilt takes a vacation and I get to stay home and clean the laundromat!! Jordan, I live eleven miles south of Shipshewana. I'm a local. In a few minutes I am taking one of the wood working Amishmen to turn his taxes in. They are genetically superior people (in my humble opinion). They can look at something and tell if it's straight or not. Besides that they are straight as arrows morally. I love it here, so blessed to live among them. |
I love the scrappiness of the trees. It's a beautiful quilt.
It looks great! Good for you for persisting.
Pretty trees! Congrats on getting it finished
You made a forest!! it is lovely. good work.
Love it, great colour combination. It sounds like a little bit of heaven where you live.
That was an intuitive suggestion from your teacher. It gives you concrete evidence of the progress you made as a quilter. Great quilt and I like the idea of the flying geese cornerstones.
Wow, that is a striking quilt! Glad you shared it with us.
Really a wonderful quilt! I bet you'll treasure this one. Beautiful!

This is a Jinny Beyer border fabric. It's almost enough to do the job if I sew it together blunt ended, not mitered. I have a 2 1/2 inch strip already on.
That will frame it up very nicely.
That fabric is perfect for your forest quilt. It will be even more beautiful.
Awesome job. I know you must feel a huge sense of accomplishment finishing off this old but adorable top. I love it. Great job.
Thanks to everyone for the admiration. It feels good to get it done and use up several pieces of fabric. I have a whole pile of Jinny Beyer borders in my stash. I thought this one was just perfect, except there might not be quite enough. I'm pretty sure I took that class prior to 2000. Where did the time go???
Could you piece the border by adding in a plain block on the ends or even in the middle of the borders?

Wow! It’s amazing how dramatic one block can be. Your work is beautiful!
Wonderful quilt.
Love the scrappy trees in your quilt. I think the border print will set it off perfectly!
Beautiful. It reminds me of the forests in Wisconsin.;)
Nice trees.
Really nice quilt, love that idea of the forest
This is really sweet. It must feel great to be able to reach a finish for something that has been "aging to perfection" for 12 years!

Update on my quilt. I mis calculated the amount of fabric needed for the borders. I had 64 inches with 5 repeats of the pattern. I was 21 inches short. There doesn't seem to be anymore. I know it has been forever since I bought that. Despite the fact that I had sewed it on and tried to fill the extra space with the scraps, I just wasn't happy. The choice was: l. make it a UFO again, 2. take that border off and replace it with another one where I had plenty of fabric. Since I want to cross it off the UFO list, I am taking that border off, yes, another date with Jack the Ripper, and finishing the quilt.Original border, not enough.

Nice job! Love tree quilts!
