A change of color

I have this paper piecing pattern (on the right) called Agave Garden by Judy Niemeyer. I like the pattern though I'm not keen on the colors. I decided that I'll use it for a Patriotic wall hanging for my niece. Her husband is an Army Ranger and when I asked what type of quilt she wanted, she said like the Patriotic one I already did for myself and she wanted to hang it up. I've been playing with designs and I'm just not into doing the same type of thing again.

I have lots of patriotic colored fabrics and she says she likes the old-fashioned type of colors, muted and old looking, not bright red/white/blue so I won't even need to buy fabric.

I'll have to see actual scale when it's done and whether the stars look right. It's 70"x70" so that blank space is pretty big. It may be able to hold something more.

love both designs good luck

QuiltnNan 04-27-2013 09:12 AM

to me, the left one looks like fireworks. the right one reminds me more of a garden. if they were for me, i'd love either one.

cindy4857 04-27-2013 10:06 AM

I wouldn't add a thing to the red white and blue one, it is fabulous.

tesspug 04-27-2013 10:18 AM

If the stars aren't large enough, could you applique or quilt eagles in that space?

Ha! I've been looking at eagles as a possibility in the two upper parts, facing each other. Also tried out five smaller stars lined up with the spikes like they're shooting out. I came across some fabric that has round Army medallions that are about 3" that could go in the middle between two stars or in the space in the pieced border, middle top/bottom/sides.

I am an Army wife and I love the first red, white and blue design with the three bigger stars :) A Judy Niemeyer quilt is on my bucket list!

Tweety2911 04-27-2013 11:17 AM

Both are beautiful! Love the stars added to #1.

I like your patriotic take on the pattern. It does look like a large fireworks star or a large rocket burst as in .... the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air ....Not sure if the wording is correct because I don't sing your national anthem.:)

I love the red white and blue one,

OMG the black one just jumped out at me and said " Mama , take me home". hehehe

Auntie Em 04-29-2013 05:39 PM

Both are so pretty....think I like the one with the white background the best.....

quilt-n-girl 04-29-2013 05:55 PM

I like the one with the five stars the best, but you can ask your niece which one she likes the best, and do that one.
It surely looks like a lot of work, you do beautiful work.

pittsburgpam 05-02-2013 08:35 PM

I don't think I will ask her. I designed one the first time from Brannock and Patek Remembrance collection and she didn't like it. I liked it. She wanted JUST red, white, and blue. So she's getting JUST red, white, and blue. :D

QUILTNMO 05-03-2013 02:14 AM

they are both very nie!!!!

Blinkokr 05-03-2013 02:18 AM

Both are wonderful and thank you for sharing
Have a Blessed day

The fabric washed and ready (the Kona Ivory for the background is still in the wash). The paper-piecing patterns are all cut out of the big sheet and organized into baggies in the Judy Niemeyer way.

nellybelle 05-28-2013 07:41 AM

Love the colors you have hanging in this last picture. I am like the rest can hardly wait to see the finished quilt. Be sure and show us when it is done.
