Pattern: Cheaper by the Dozen (uses 12 fat quarters)
Fabric: got it in a kit and don't remember, but someone recognized the floral print when I posted the top only. Quilting: a friend who has just started quilting for others did this for me. She's quilted her own for about a year, but just now feels confident enough to quilt for others. I usually bring the backing over for the binding, but did a separate binding for this one. Did "cheat" and machine stitch, but like the way the scallop looks with the quilting. THis is the first one where I joined the ends of the binding so they fit snugly - rather than overlapping them. I really like how that came out and learned it from this tutorial: http://sewfunwiththesecretcloset.blo...e-binding.html Backing is from local quilt shop, but I learned that a delicate print doesn't show up. I often use sheets and when I pay for a backing I want to see it! WHen you're halfway across the room this just looks solid white. My mother's birthday is next week. She's been hinting for a quilt, but has no idea this is coming. I tested the waters by giving her two table toppers for Mother's Day. She uses them all the time and shows them off to friends so she moved to tht top of the Quilt Worthy list! (She's VERY picky and I just wasn't sure until then.) |

My mother rents a house on a river in the Texas Hill Country each summer for our family to share a 5 day vacation together. That's my mother, my husband and I, our two grown kids, one son-in-law, and 2 grandboys - ages 3 and barely 4. This event happens to coincide with her birthday. Last year she turned 80 and I had contacted everyone I could think of to send me a birthday card for her - I was aiming at 80 of them, but got over 100. She has played with those cards all year! I found a really pretty box to put them in and they have pride of place in her living room. This year it's The Quilt. I know she'll love it! Good thing she doesn't live here in town with me or I'd be over there now showing it off! I'm just proud I'm not finishing it at midnight the day before we leave!

@sewmanyideas - that does sound right - Tanya Whelan for Westminster? They are beautiful and feel SOOO good. This was the first quilt I made that had such luscious fabrics. I pieced it back in January and just now am getting it finished.

I've commented on here before that my mother is a "block flipper" - checking how seams meet, etc. That is quite intimidating! I'm 57 years old so really should be used to this by now. I now know that she's not making a critical statement necessarily - I'm sure her mother flipped her blocks, too! So I just don't show her anything that's not finished.
I don't always miter corners - shocking, I know - but made sure to do it for this one - block flippers like their corners mitered. :) |

Mother crocheted before her hands got too arthritic to continue. The last thing she made before she gave it up was an afghan for me. She never quilted that I know of, but her mother was an expert! I have high standards to live up to. BUT... in the beautiful quilts I have from my grandmother there are some .. unmitered corners (gasp!), some machine stitched bindings (Oh no!), and some quite awful double knits. I treasure them all and know that my mother will treasure this one.

Lucky Mom--that is so pretty!

Pretty!
|
I think your mom will love the quilt. Great colors! Thanks for sharing the link for the binding process. I think this is the easiest to understand tutorial I've watched on doing this. I do pretty good on my bindings until I get to ending it and doing the overlap and getting rid of the tails and then it all falls apart. :) Hopefully now that I've seen this video tute I'll improve the process this time. Thanks!
