Here are the first two blocks of "Checkerboard Flowers,"

http://www.storyquilts.com/html/chec...d_flowers.html

which is a block of the month I've been working on. I got the first block "Winter Roses," and then two weeks later, I got the second block "Crocuses Up." I was behind before I ever got started. Fortunately, I'm all caught up now. (I'll probably get another one tomorrow.)

I finished the "Rose" block several weeks ago, but didn't post it because the borders were wrong. I had dark squares butting up against dark squares and light against light. I thought about it, compared it to the pattern picture, etc., trying to figure out what I needed to do to fix it. Finally, I ended up just taking the borders off and resewing them. Ordinarily, I'm not that fussy about my blocks. As I get better at quilting, I expect more from myself. I knew that would stick out like a sore thumb if I left it as is.

I hope you like my blocks.

Crocuses Up--the colors are a little off. What appears to be navy blue is actually royal purple

Was this a BOM with the fabric included? My favorites are floral quilts. I have a couple BOM patterns if you are interested. One is "Welcome to My Garden".

donnajean 07-19-2010 02:43 AM

Sorry, I had not clicked on the link you provided. Answered my own question. Like most BOM kits, there are always a couple blocks I'm not crazy about - not talking about your great quilting, but the patterns provided in the set. I just do a little adapting if I'm not completely satisfied with a particular flower pattern.

What a fun and clever way to do the flowers, pinking the edges. I love your blocks and the pattern...

Yes, I'm a little nervous about how this is going to turn out because I'm supposed to wash it so the edges will fray. Hmmmmm. It might be cute, and it might be a disaster.

Oh, it's really so simple. If you can trace, you can do this. Just read up a little in a quilting book. You'll see it's easier than you think.

pab58 07-19-2010 07:35 AM

I don't know if I've welcomed you yet so.........welcome (again) from southeastern Michigan!! I really love your pics! I never thought of pinking the edges for applique! That's a really clever idea. ;)

Quilter7x 07-19-2010 07:37 AM

What a clever idea! This would make great wall hangings to donate to the church's fair.

Ditter43 07-19-2010 08:35 AM

They are both so pretty! Did you pink the edges or did they come precut that way? I love the colors...It will be so pretty! :D

I pinked the edges. The pattern instructed me to do it this way and I've sewn 1/4-inch from the edges. When the quilt is washed, it's supposed to ravel at the edges like a rag quilt. Hope it works.

amandasgramma 07-19-2010 08:46 AM

SOOOOO cute! And I LOVE the colors! Great job!

Pam Pollock 07-19-2010 09:18 AM
