Great job... looks complicated!

Tweety2911 11-23-2016 10:18 AM

Fabulous quilt! Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful quilt!

needles3thread 11-23-2016 11:02 AM

This one, I love. Probably need to make one like it!

busy fingers 11-23-2016 11:05 AM

That adds a whole new dimension to the dresden plate. Nicely done.

QUILTNMO 11-23-2016 11:14 AM

gorgeous !!!

Beautiful quilt.

Beautiful Dresden Plates. I actually like your patterns better than all scrappy. They look very nice.

Innov8R 11-23-2016 02:48 PM

I have been studying Dresden patterns because I want to make one. Yours is so pretty that I may just dive in and make mine.

MarleneC 11-23-2016 05:12 PM

That is just beautiful and love the variations in the blocks.

gramquilter2 11-23-2016 05:14 PM

Love this pattern and yours it fantastic.

I did actually think the same thing with certain colours; I did in fact make a dartboard block 30 years ago when making my 1st Sampler Quilt - I'd run out of most fabrics but needed one last block so I made a dartboard block!

I really like your quilt. Believe it or not----I just ask the members here about purchasing the wedge dresden template! Did you use this particular template from MSQC? I really like the checkered affect you get. Thx for any input on this.

I used the EZ Dresden Quilt template which gives an 8" blade (I think from Nancy's Notions) I couldn't see what size Jenny's template was in the video but we use 4 x 2.5" strips sewn together to give an 8" width and this template fitted exactly - I used a Bali Pop pack. Hope this helps.

Not at all, the biggest problem is deciding which 4 strips to put together because we can't envisage the final colour arrangement until we cut a wedge/blade out and put some together. If we do as I did at first and chose 4 colours I liked best to get the 2 main pink blocks, it takes on less of a dartboard look. You can just choose 4 fabrics you like and make strips out of those. I don't normally like scrappy quilts because they have too many colours and don't look organized!

Yes I agree and think I might have seen a similar one somewhere!

I just hope your bucket hasn't got a hole in it LOL!

No, you're not wrong, as per my comment re the EZ template, all you need is an 8" template and 8" of fabric. A friend is about to order the Go! Cutter Dresden pack but I can see from the pic online that the blades will be smaller, therefore she will have smaller blocks. Jenny Doan uses 21" blocks, mine are 20" so depending on the overall size of our finished Dresden, we can change block sizes too.

So do I but I just wish she wouldn't keep coming up with new ideas so quickly, we can't keep up LOL!

Nice Dresden quilt.

Thank you all very much for your kind compliments. I'm pleased that you like my quilt so much and hope that my reply comments help those who have asked, and those who are less brave to take the challenge yet.

Geri, as usual with us quilters and sewers, our brains function after we've walked away from a question and, thinking of your reply here, the idea of QAYG is to put all pieces together at once, thereby completing a block in one go, ie backing, batting and quilt top, then all 3 are stitched together (which I'm sure you know already so forgive my preaching to the converted); so whilst your ideas might work in some applications for general applique, I don't think it would work with QAYG. We would need to prepare the Dresden and apply it to the quilt top fabric, trim away unwanted background fabric then layer onto the batting and backing for quilting which would mean 2 extra steps in the process. I hope my writing this explanation will help some who are less experienced in our wonderful hobby.

Great quilt. Congratulations on a job well done...

Wow. I love dresdens and really like these checkerboard ones you have done. Here goes another quilt on my bucket list. Thank you for sharing. Nice work.

Love your Mary Poppins quote. Just thinking, we would have to draw the finished Dresden shape onto fabric first and then allow for 1/4" seams at least before laying the Dresden plate down for anchoring - doesn't sound worth the effort to me but please do try if you like.

Cutaway Applique is not as hard as it sounds! You don't slit around each blade. You stitch the plates down around the outside edge, not between the blades. (You don't have to draw anything. The stitch line where you sew the plate to the background is your guide line.) Working from the back side, grab the plate fabric and the background fabric between your thumb and finger and pull it apart. Cut a big slit or an x in the background fabric. Then you simply cut away the excess background fabric by cutting about 1/4 inch inside the seam. It could be wider than 1/4 inch if needed. You should then have cut away basically a big circle a bit smaller than the plate. It makes the quilt so much lighter. That's how I do all my applique because its too hot here in FL for heavy quilts. I also prefer cutaway applique because when you quilt it the plates look better with the batting sort of puffing up the blades. If you have round tip scissors its even easier, because the bottom blade holds the two fabrics apart as you cut. Try it on a test block and I think you will be surprised how easy it really is.

Generally I don't do a lot of applique because I can't sit for too long, leaning forward over the machine to concentrate on stitch placement is hard on my back and hips but I appreciate your suggestion of cutting a circle out from the back, that way too much fabric would not be wasted as circles can be re-used. I have just bought a Sit & Stand desk from Officeworks so that I can vary between standing for embroidery and sitting for sewing, it sits on top of a normal desk or bench top and has variable heights. Not set up yet but hopefully will make my sewing more comfortable. Thanks for your advice.

I don't know what Jenny's looked like, but I can say that your is a real beauty.

Jordan 11-25-2016 04:09 PM

Thank you Ada for your feed back on the template. I have an EZ plastic template but I wasn't sure how wide to cut the strips but I think I am more clear on everything. I thought I needed the template from MSQC.

BonnieI 11-25-2016 08:15 PM

Really nice! Was it hard to do?

DottyD 11-26-2016 03:09 AM

Having watched the tutorial from Jenny at MSQC and seeing your lovely quilt - I have just ordered the Dresden ruler!
Thank you for the inspiration !

I've seen those desks advertised. Hope it works out well for you. I don't have problems sitting to piece but when I machine quilt I have to do it in bits and spurts or my shoulders kill me. I'm guilty of pushing myself and then I really feel it that night and the next day! Getting older is not fun!
As for wasting fabric, yes, you can salvage part of it, but I don't usually worry about it. If you don't cut it away you are using it anyway when you leave it in the quilt. But yes, there have been times I have put the cutoffs in my scrap bin and used them for strip piecing like in Spiderweb blocks. I hope you will try it. It makes the blocks look so much prettier when quilted.
