Checkered Dresden

1 Attachment(s)
Here is Checkered Dresden, an MSQC pattern demonstrated by Jenny Doan on YouTube last month. I chose the 4 pinkish fabrics to try the pattern and then, on watching the video again, realized that the blades were meant to be mixed up to make a scrappy creation. I also added an extra row to make it double sized. I still have to bind it but couldn't wait to show you all. Blocks are 20" finished and, as you can see, I added sashings and only 5" borders instead of 8".

Very pretty!

GingerK 11-22-2016 02:42 PM

Oh I really like that!! I have made Dresdens but never thought about making them checkered. Oh yay, another one for the bucket list. Thanks for sharing.

lynnie 11-22-2016 02:42 PM

stunning, absolutely beautiful

I forgot to say that I have filled this with flannelette instead of batting to make a lighter summer weight quilt, like the old bedspreads/counterpanes; it is still quite weighty with the double layering of applique on the background fabric.

Pretty quilt and I like your arrangement better!

twinkie 11-22-2016 03:34 PM

Wow that is what I am working on. I luv yours. Beautiful

NZquilter 11-22-2016 04:02 PM

Wow, that looks complicated! Wonderful job!

marilynr 11-22-2016 04:12 PM

Looks like a lot of work. You did a great job & it turned out beautifully.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidoscis! Love it! To eliminate the weighness/bulk of the plates, can you cut the background out from behind them? Just a thought.....

mucky 11-22-2016 04:16 PM

What a great idea. Very interesting

MadQuilter 11-22-2016 04:38 PM

Oh I love it. Your colors are smashing!

Now, that would be rather tricky for me because my right hand is not fully functioning after last year's stroke; gripping pins and needles is a big problem so trusting myself to be that careful slitting around each blade might be tempting providence Geri. Love your Mary Poppins quote. Just thinking, we would have to draw the finished dresden shape onto fabric first and then allow for 1/4" seams at least before laying the dresden plate down for anchoring - doesn't sound worth the effort to me but please do try if you like.

Gorgeous quilt. Another one to add to my to do list.

Mariposa 11-22-2016 09:38 PM

Very pretty!

That is a stunning Dresden quilt! Making it checkered adds a wonderful dimension to a traditional pattern. I like the larger blocks. To reiterate, it is stunning.

sinceresissy 11-23-2016 04:07 AM

Looks good. I like that it is a checkered.

LindaJ 11-23-2016 04:26 AM

I love it! However, these Dresdens looks like dart boards to me.

hcarpanini 11-23-2016 05:18 AM

Nicely done!

No, I meant after you have sewn onto background. I do it all the time.....with hand applique or machine......one can even do it with iron on fusible if you just "window" that fusible....but to each his own......you did a great job..hope your difficulty improves.

Sew Freak 11-23-2016 05:52 AM

luv it!!!! very pretty! I'm trying to get around to making one myself....and upon seeing your, I'm kinda rethinking the scrappy look!

Jordan 11-23-2016 05:59 AM

I really like your quilt. Believe it or not----I just ask the members here about purchasing the wedge dresden template! Did you use this particular template from MSQC? I really like the checkered affect you get. Thx for any input on this.

Jordan 11-23-2016 06:03 AM

I forgot to say that I think this pattern would be nice in Christmas or Halloween fabric. Just a thought!

DottyD 11-23-2016 06:28 AM

Very nice - I really like that !

BrendaK 11-23-2016 06:54 AM

BEAUTIFUL! BrendaK

DonnaPea 11-23-2016 07:19 AM

What an unusual pattern - I like this a lot.

quilter2theend 11-23-2016 07:56 AM

That is a very lovely quilt, hope you enjoy it for many years.

kwiltkrazy 11-23-2016 08:35 AM

I just love it

GailG 11-23-2016 08:44 AM

I love the not-so-scrappy look. I have mega problems with "random" scrappy. And I also love that you chose to add the extra row. Beautiful work! I can see my bucket list getting longer and longer.

I was wondering the same thing. I've got a couple of dresden plate templates. I would imagine that if the correct number of wedges are made, it would work. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

annette1952 11-23-2016 08:53 AM

It turned out gorgeous! I made 2 of the checkered Dresden blocks by Jenny to make a couple pillows for my sister. I couldn't believe how fast it all came together. I love Jenny's tutes
