I also have a quilt that I am working on, with this same pattern of quilt blocks. My great grandmother taught me how to do the chicken scratch. The blocks I have on my quilt are different colors and some were done by great grandmother, my grandmother, and great Aunt and even my great uncle. Only one of them is still with us on this earth, so this quilt is very special to me. I have put them all together and I am hand quilting it with the help of my two daughters. This is a very simple technique, the hardest part is marking off the block. This is done best with the gingham fabric.

I was at a Vintage Fair in the beautiful City of York at the weekend and watched a lady demonstrating this technique. She referred to it as 'depression lace' there is quite a lot of information if you Google it!!

My first one was so large made in light blue gingham that it became a California queen. Thought I'd never make another but I just started on one in guess what, red and white like yours. Loved the beauty of the chicken scratch pattern and took my complete blue quilt to craft meeting and we started one in a heart shape. Doing chicken scratch can be great fun.:o

I haven't done any of this in a long time. It is really easy. Wish I had some of the work I'd done, but….. I'd like to do initials for my 5 DGDs...

I've actually seen this technique recently in a vintage craft book featuring skirts and aprons. Your quilt is inspiring! I see a future quilting project for me in the future.

I haven't done chicken scratch in years, but I really loved how all my projects look when I was done. The last ones I did were animals - a chick, rabbit and a pig. It was a favorite technique for borders on curtains. You did a lovely job on your stars!

Years ago I did that before I started quilting. I loved it. That must have been in the early 60's. Never thought of doing it for a quilt but I sure love your idea. It will be wonderful and a work of art.
