With four x 2 1/2" strips, these finish at 16" across from straight edge to straight edge. Vary the strip widths to get the size you want. :-D

I'm sorry you're having trouble, it works for me. Briefly, you sew four strips of 2 1/2" wide and the width of fabric together then cut this panel into six x 60 deg triangles, using the 60 deg line on your ruler. Then you sew these triangles together in sets of six, alternating the fabric placements. If you sew first into two sets of three then join the two halves, there are no set in seams to worry about. Sandwich, quilt (I just SITD across the seams between the triangles) and bind. :-D
