comfort zone blown

on the weekend someone asked if we were pushing our limits.
i haven't made anything like this before. i am pretty chuffed, though i know this one isn't going to be to everyone's taste by a country mile. these are leftovers from a steep learning curve of a lone star project. it is for a friend, and she ended up buying an absurd amount of fabric thanks to a first run disaster. given i am going to handquilt a big chunk of the lone star, i wanted to get her something lovely and reasonably quickly as a place holder, and something that used up some of the fabric she invested in. i thought a couch quilt or something she could lay at the foot of the bed to accent the lone star would be nice. this is 60x84. i'll machine quilt it reasonably simply this weekend, and hopefully be able to give it to her next week when i cook her a birthday dinner (look at my imaginary binding skills! lightning fast!) anyway....thanks for giving me a place to share it. whole quilt escher spiral? reverse applique. thank you connecting threads for your awesome instruction freebie called "circular logic." very inspirational! and hats off in a big way to the wonderful jinny beyer and her magical sense of colour and design. aileen |

Wow. You jumped right out of your comfort zone......nicely.
Both of your quilts are so beautiful!! What a great friend you are!! Can I ask where you came up with the pattern you used for the "place holder" quilt? I love the stripes!!
both are great quilts.
Boy, both are stunning!
Wow!!! Both quilts are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still have a "Lonestar" quilt on my bucket list!!!!!
Just gorgeous. Love the colours.
WOW! I love both! The first one is so creative and fresh looking. The colors are perfect for a lone star too.
I love how one is modern & the other so traditional, but they share the same colors.
They are both beautiful. |
Your "placeholder" is totally not to my tastes...........but I love it! How strange is that? You leaving your comfort zone may have just made me reconsider mine. Thanks for sharing. It's a wonderful quilt.
I love it all! your place holder quilt is amazing! and so is the lone star! I think you have found a new 'comfort zone'!
both are terrific quilts
you are a master!!

Awesome quilts, both of them. For being outside your comfort zone, you did a heck of great job. Good work.

WOW. Great jopb on both!

Both are stunning - I am finding that when I step out of my box it is very gratifying and usually lot of fun

Oh Aileen!! They are both stunning!! Good for you making that leap out of your comfort zone!
It looks like you moved smoothly out of your comfort zone---gorgeous quilts!
Both are gorgeous. Have fun quilting the lone star.
I love them both! Great job and great fabrics.
They are both lovely. Creative AND pretty.
I like the place holder better than the lone star, although I would love to have a friend that would make such a beautiful gift. It just goes to show that sometimes, fixing a "mistake" can result in something better than one ever imagined!
Great job. Both quilts are beautiful.
The landing from the jump is awesome!! Love the colors. You did a great job putting it all together. My first (and only) lone star was on Quilt Smart foundation and I had it machine quilted.
both are great ,the lone star stumped me once haven't had the guts too try again.
sure she will love both. |
Wow I love your place holder quilt. I tend to prefer modern and unexpected quilts more than traditional ones.
The Lone Star is beautiful, I know a huge amount of work has gone and will be going into it, but the extra unexpected and much more appealing to me. |

Love your quilts I don't know why but the first one makes me think of dominoes.
Beautiful in blues. I tried a lone star once. For some reason I got half the strips backwards and gave up.
Very nice - the colors are wonderful. Congrats to you for taking the step.
Both are lovely! Doing a star can certainly put you out of your comfort zone!
different is GOOD!
