Cone thread holder

This is how I use my cone thread on my treadle. I thought others might find it interesting. I used an empty cone and drilled 2 corresponding holes through it to fit on the upright spool holder. I put a stick on Velcro circle on the inner cone and push the full cone onto it tightly. It works great and the thread feeds off it nicely.

Am glad you posted that idea ... was going to reroll everything on a smaller spool by hand and hope for the best! ; )

BrendaK 10-29-2012 07:32 AM

Clever of you. Is it less expensive to purchase cone's rather than spools? It seems like I am really going through spools. Thanks for sharing. BrendaK

Brenda, I use cone thread on my treadle where I do a lot of mending and everyday sewing. I keep off white in it and a cone will last a long time. For my Bernina and quilting, I really like the Aurifil thread.

Another way of using cone thread is just put the cone thread in a jar set behind your sewing machine and thread it as you normally do and sew. Have done this for years until my husband made me a cone shape wood dole rod that fit on my sewing machine that now hold my cone thread when I sew. I now use cone thread for almost all my sewing it it much cheaper then buy single spool of thread.

kydeb 10-31-2012 07:11 AM

I love it! Now, to save an empty spool!!

Quilt Novice 10-31-2012 07:56 AM

What a brilliant idea! I am going to copy your idea for my regular sewing machine as well. Thanks very much.

carolynjo 10-31-2012 09:01 AM

Yes, Brenda, it is much less expensive to buy the cones. Go online and check out Long Creek Mills. He ships everywhere.

roserips 10-31-2012 09:39 AM

CLEAVER I will have to remember that one!

blueheavenfla 10-31-2012 07:33 PM

Thanks for sharing this idea. I have and use 3 cone holders without a problem except that I have more than 3 machines, usually with several threaded at the same time (and on different floors of my house). Now this idea will keep all my machines that I need threaded at the same time well supplied with freely flowing thread. Looks like a great idea for the vintage/antique machines. And no more running up and down the stairs!

My time 10-31-2012 07:48 PM

Brilliant idea! I'm going to try this with my featherweight.

pinebeltquilter 10-31-2012 08:38 PM

Good idea, but I never would have thought of it. I have a treadle, but I never use it.
