I too had trouble with a recent crayon wall hanging and solved the problem by painting the crayon portions with textile medium....worked great! Love the quilts.

If you use a white crayon under the color it sets the crayon into the fabric.

Also, I just read this morning that a washed and dryed poly/cotton fabric is suggested. It said that 100% cotton would not hold the crayon and would fade with washing. You might do a search Crayon Stained Quilt Art, if you would like to read the details, it was on FaveCrafts.
